Impressionism 19th-century art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. Impressionism originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s.

Post impressionism Paul Cezanne, Pyramid of Skulls, 1901
is a predominantly French art movement that developed roughly between 1886 and 1905, from the last Impressionist exhibition to the birth of Fauvism. Post-Impressionism emerged as a reaction against Impressionists' concern for the naturalistic depiction of light and colour. extended Impressionism while rejecting its limitations: they continued using vivid colours, often thick application of paint, and real-life subject matter, but were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, distort form for expressive effect, and use unnatural or arbitrary colour. Soft Pastels an art medium in the form of a stick, consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder. Pastels have been used by artists since the Renaissance, and gained considerable popularity in the 18th century, when a number of notable artists made pastel their primary medium.

Homework – quiz grade, due 2/14
Choose one of the following artists to research: - Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh Create a border in the style of Impressionism or Post -Impressionism. On the left side, create a large title, using block, bubble, or other creative lettering with the artist’s name. On the left side, glue a color portrait image next to the artist’s name On the left page, write a paragraph or two (5 – 6 sentences to a paragraph) about the artist. The paragraphs must include the following items about the artist: DOB and DOD, place of birth and place where they produced the most, the years of production, and characteristics of their artworks. Describe 3 artworks that you enjoy from this artist using at least 2 elements and 2 principles in your explanation of each. Also state which artwork is your favorite and why. On the right side, print and glue the 5 examples of artworks from this artist. Three must be the artworks described in your paragraphs. Below each printout, state the artist, title and the date it was created. Below the printouts, make two drawings: 1) replicate one of the artworks and 2) create your own original design inspired from the artworks.
