Degradation. At the postsynaptic neuron tropolone inhibits the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), which inactivates norepinephrine (6a). Normetanephrine (NM) is formed by the action of COMT on norepinephrine. At the presynaptic neuron degradation by monoamine oxidase (MAO) is blocked by the monoamine oxidase inhibitors phenelzine and tranylcypromine (6b), as described in Figure 63–5.
