David Greene, MLIS Liaison Librarian, Humanities and Social Sciences Library Emily Kingsland, MLIS Liaison Librarian, Humanities and Social Sciences Library

2 Today’s Objectives Get to know EndNote Translate your research topic into a search strategy Learn to critically assess sources Publishing tips

3 EndNote: Create a Library
DG - Save references from online searches, as well as manually enter references; - Organize your references into different folders (groups); - Find the full text of your references; - Format your references in your favorite citation style and create bibliographies; - Cite references within a text document (Cite while you write). - The library offers 90 minute EndNote Essential workshops all year.

4 Where do I start? DG - Library catalogue (classic vs WCL)
- Multidisciplinary databases - Subject-specific databases - Format-based databases - Citation tracking databases - Subject Guides list most important research resources by discipline.

5 Identify your research question

6 Narrowing a sample research topic
Migrant workers in Asia and North America Filipina nannies working in Canada in the 21st century What are the working conditions of Filipina nannies working in Canada?

7 2. Identify the main concepts in the question

8 Finding the main concepts
What are the working conditions of Filipina nannies working in Canada?

9 3. Brainstorm synonyms and related terms

10 Work environment Quality of work life Job satisfaction Domestic worker
CONCEPT 1: Working conditions CONCEPT 2: Nannies CONCEPT 3: Filipina CONCEPT 4: Canada Work environment Quality of work life Job satisfaction Domestic worker Domestic labo(u)rer Governess Babysitter Filipino Philippines Southeast Asia Canadian North America North American

11 4. Build your search

12 Narrows Narrows Boolean Operators Expands AND a search a search OR NOT
(Nannies Job satisfaction) OR OR Domestic workers) NOT (North America NOT Mexico) Narrows a search Expands a search Allow you to demonstrate relationships between your search terms. - AND - allows you to search for both concepts – means they will both words appear in the same record – OR - allows you to find things that contain either one or both concepts/words – NOT - Requires the presence of one word/ concept but excludes all records with the other ->excludes records containing the second word/concept - since words like plant has multiple meanings, allows you to exclude results containing the word plants under its other meaning Narrows a search

13 Boolean Operators - AND
Narrows a search 107 Hits Nannies 2560 Hits Job satisfaction Hits

14 Expands a search Boolean Operators - OR 258 Hits Nannies 156 Hits
Domestic workers 102 Hits

15 Boolean Operators - NOT
Narrows a search 291 Hits North America 336 Hits Mexico 45 Hits

16 * Truncation Canad* Canada Canadian Canadians Canadian’s Canadiens
Etc… Canad*

17 More Advanced Search Techniques
Quotation marks Use for phrase searching Example: “domestic workers” Parentheses (nannies OR “domestic workers”) AND (Philippines OR “southeast asia”)

18 Exercise: Searching a Database

25 Disseminating Your Research
Why publish? Attract an audience for your work and increase its relevance Be part of a scholarly community Improve chances for employment Improve grad school acceptance chances
