4 What you’re really being asked is – is this number closer to 30 or 40?

5 36 36 is closer to 40. Therefore, the number 36 rounded to the nearest ten is 30 35 40

6 Now you try a few… 1. Round 72 to the nearest ten. 71 72 70 80 Because 72 is closer to 70, 72 rounds to 70. 2. Round 19 to the nearest ten. 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 10 20 Because 19 is closer to 20, 19 rounds to 20. 3. Round 99 to the nearest ten. 91 92 93 94 95 96 97 98 99 90 100 Because 99 is closer to 100, 99 rounds to 100.

When the numbers get bigger, it gets a little trickier… Round 6 , to the nearest tens place.

8 Step 1:Find the number in the tens place.
6 , 7 7 3 Step 1:Find the number in the tens place. Step 2: Underline everything that comes before this number also. Step 3: Now we’re looking at the number 677!! This number will either stay 677 or round up to the next number, Find the number after the number in the tens place and circle it.

The circled ‘neighbor’ is called the ‘BOSSY NEIGHBOR’ because it tells the underlined number what to do. To figure out if 677 is staying 677 or rounding up to 678, we need to use the bossy neighbor and our rounding hill.

677 STAYS AND EVERYTHING PAST THE UNDERLINED NUMBER BECOMES A 0! , 6 7 7 6,773 ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST TEN IS 6,770.
