North Korea missile test
2
North Korea's missile test on Sunday was the country's most successful yet, according to analysts, who say Pyongyang may now have a weapon capable of hitting a key US military base in the Pacific. On Monday, Pyongyang (the capital of North Korea) made the extraordinary claim that its latest test proved the country had a rocket capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead and that the US mainland and its military base on the Pacific island of Guam were now within its "sighting range for strike.” Significantly the test appeared to have struck near the eastern coast of Russia, which prompted a reaction on Monday from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Although the trajectory of the recent launch was high, what's worrying to the United States, among other countries, is that if this missile were fired at a different trajectory, it may have been able to reach the US Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. Guam is situated around 2,200 miles southeast of North Korea. And the US rotates heavy bombers, including B-1s, B-2s and B-52s, through the island. The test could also just as easily be a stepping stone to a longer-range weapon. US President Donald Trump's administration has made North Korea a priority security issue. Following Sunday's test, the US called for repercussions from the international community.

In Other News A massive cyberattack has hit more than 200,000 computers in 150 countries, spreading a virus that has crippled the systems of banks, hospitals and other institutions around the world. a group of unknown hackers launched a ransomware virus known as "WannaCry." The virus locks a computer's information until the victim pays a certain amount of money (hence the "ransom" in ransomware). The virus exploits a weakness in computers with Microsoft Windows and is primarily targeted at businesses, where a network of connected computers can all be taken down in one fell swoop. Three people have died from an Ebola outbreak in a remote northern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. If you'll recall, an outbreak of the virus ravaged West Africa in 2014, claiming more than 11,000 lives. So far, officials don't know the scope of this new outbreak, so it's too early to issue travel restrictions or other warnings.
