There aren’t enough homes for the people and families that need them But we need to make sure that the homes we build are not just four walls and a roof, they also need to be great places to live in, providing more than just shelter 220,000 and 250,000 homes per year are currently required to meet the housing demand (source HBF Key Messages 2015 quarter 4) There aren’t enough homes for the people and families that need them But we need to make sure that the homes we build are not just four walls and a roof, they also need to be great places to live in, providing more than just shelter 220,000 and 250,000 homes per year are currently required to meet the housing demand (source HBF Key Messages 2015 quarter 4)

3 How do you solve the housing crisis in your country?
What is the Challenge? What You have been tasked with using the knowledge, skills and experience you have developed during the ‘Green Living’ activity to think of solutions to the following challenge: How do you solve the housing crisis in your country? Select England / Scotland / Wales or Northern Ireland as appropriate

4 Setting the Challenge Working in groups of 4-6 you will
need to have the following roles:- Group Leader to be known as the Prime/First Minister of your country Representative/s for local communities Representative/s for the house building/construction sector Adviser/s to the government/leader 1st bullet point – the group may want to vote in the Prime/First Minister, or the Activity Lead may choose. If there are more than 4 in a group you can have more than 1 participant for each role, except the Prime/First Minister

5 Considerations Considerations
You need to consider the following themes when solving this challenge: Demographics – what type of people need a home e.g. families/young people and why? Sustainability – how can we ensure the way homes are built are environmentally friendly? Costs – how can you make homes more affordable? Planning – where do we build homes and how the permission to build these homes is granted?

6 Sources of Information
Websites you may want to visit to find out more information: Home Builders Federation Reports National Planning Policy Framework A look at the main UK housing market data 2011 UK Census Reports Other ideas for sourcing information include: Speaking to somebody from the house building/construction sector (ask your group leader for ideas) Contacting your local council’s planning or regeneration department Contact your local MP Can you think of any other ideas? Please speak to your teacher / tutor before contacting anybody directly It may be best for the Activity Lead to co-ordinate contact with external individuals and organisations, such as planning department, MP. Additional website links can be found on the ‘Useful Websites’ document

7 Press Conference At the end of the challenge you will be expected to hold a press conference to present your findings to the national and local press Each group member will be required to present their findings based on their role The total time of the press conference presentation is 10 minutes Other members of the group will act as members of the press and ask you questions relating to your presentation
