Goals Prepare students to be leaders in their future professional, educational, and service endeavors by providing leadership curriculum that can lead to a certificate. Offer the Certificate of Leadership as an embedded credential for undergraduate students. Provide opportunities for students to apply skills and knowledge acquired through activity-based and experiential learning in practical experiences. Enhance instructional delivery through activity-based and experiential learning practices. Will enhance student learning and offer a leadership certificate for undergraduate students who will engage in new course work, achieve new learning outcomes, and be exposed to new experiential learning opportunities. Impact the learning environment by providing AU faculty not only the opportunity to provide leadership in teaching innovations but also to mentor future generations of leaders within their respective disciplines.

Leadership Certificate
The leadership certificate will expose students to leadership theory and practice, guide students in their leadership development and offer students opportunities to gain significant leadership experiences. Earning the Leadership Certificate
Leadership Course Bridge Course(s)/ Leadership Experience Capstone Experience The Leadership Course will INTRODUCE leadership concepts to the students. Bridge courses/leadership experiences will REINFORCE those leadership concepts. Capstone Experience will allow students to MASTER those leadership concepts. All in all, the certificate is a developmental certificate – students will be provided the tools throughout his or her curriculum to practice and build upon to become seasoned leaders. Introduce Reinforce Master

Bridge Courses Foster the student’s leadership and professional development within his or her chosen field. Value-added Utilize experiential learning teaching methods Incorporate leadership competencies Assessing competencies There are four SLOs, which will include leadership competencies. Faculty who teach the courses will determine which SLOs/competencies will be taught and assessed.

Why Leadership and Experiential Learning?
LEADERS ARE DEVELOPED THROUGH PRACTICE. Academic experiences and involvement have significant impacts on career development. Cooperative or group learning experiences have a positive influence on self-reported growth in career-related skills such as leadership abilities, public speaking ability, ability to influence others, and ability to work effectively in groups.

Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is the process of learning through experience, and is more specifically defined as "learning through reflection on doing". Tell me, and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me, and I understand. ~Confucius Experiential Learning includes Internships, practicum Active learning exercises Simulations Role-playing Reflection Teaching students how to reflect on what they learn Lecturing involves the transfer of information from the notes of the lecturer to the notes of the student without passing through the minds of either (Multiple sources).

Experiential Learning
Broadly, experiential learning is any learning that supports students in applying their knowledge and conceptual understanding to real-world problems or situations where the instructor directs and facilitates learning. The classroom, laboratory, or studio can serve as a setting for experiential learning through embedded activities such as case and problem-based studies, guided inquiry, simulations, experiments, or art projects (Wurdinger & Carlson, 2010).

Experiential Learning Cycle
Experience Begins with doing something in which the individual, team or organization are assigned a task. This means taking time-out from "doing" and stepping back from the task and reviewing what has been done and experienced. At this stage lots of questions are asked and communication channels are opened to others members of the team. Vocabulary is very important and is needed to verbalize and discuss with others. Next Steps Identify and recruit students to take the LDRS 2000 course in the spring Nominate students Identify bridge courses in each of the programs of study Identify faculty to teach the bridge courses Participate in workshops Develop a culture of leadership on campus Support student leadership development Actively promote the leadership certificate Participate in the Leadership Competency of the Month with your faculty, staff and students Providing undergraduate research and service opportunities And…apply for the EIF!!

Education Innovation Fund
Education Innovation Fund has been established as a dedicated fund reserved for teaching faculty who wish to pursue experiential learning opportunities with their students.

Drop-Ins Drop-Ins are scheduled to provide guidance to faculty members who are interested in submitting a proposal to the EIF.
