1 Excel Lesson 5 Using Functions
Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory Mrs. Leonard Pasewark & Pasewark

2 Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
Objectives Identify the parts of a function. Enter formulas with functions. Use functions to solve mathematical problems. Use functions to solve statistical problems. Use functions to solve financial problems. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

3 Objectives (continued)
Use logical functions to make decisions with worksheet data. Use functions to insert times and dates in a worksheet. Use text functions to format and work with cell contents. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

4 Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
What are Functions? A function is a ____________________ to write an equation that performs a calculation. For example, the SUM function adds values in a range of cells. Functions often simplify formulas that are long or complex Excel includes functions to perform complex calculations in specialized areas of mathematics, including __________, logic, trigonometry, accounting, and finance Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

5 Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
What are Functions? A formula with a function has three parts: an equal sign, a function name, and at least one argument. The equal sign identifies the cell contents as a formula. The function name identifies the _________ to be performed. The ____________ is the value the function uses to perform a calculation, including a number, text, or a cell reference that acts as an operand. The argument follows the function name and is enclosed in parentheses. If a function contains more than one argument, commas separate the arguments. 6 Entering Formulas with Functions
To enter a formula with a function, first, start the formula with an equal sign. Second, select the function you want to use. Third, enter the arguments. Finally, enter the completed formula. The results appear in the cell. The best way to select a function is from the ________ _______________. Click the Insert Function button on the Formula Bar to open the Insert Function dialog box. First, click a category in the “Or select a category box”, and then click the function you want in the Select a function box. A brief description of the selected function appears near the bottom of the dialog box. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

8 Entering Formulas with Functions
The Function Arguments dialog box provides a __________ of each argument you need to enter for the selected function. After all arguments are complete, click OK> The function is entered in the active cell. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

9 Entering Formulas with Functions

10 Entering Formulas with Functions
You can also enter a formula with a function directly in a cell by typing an equal sign, the function name, and the argument. ________ _______________ helps you enter a formula with a valid function name and arguments. As you begin to type the function name, a list of function names appears below the active cell. The functions listed match the letters you have typed. 12 Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
Types of Functions Excel provides many functions you can use in formulas. Each function has a different ____________. The functions are organized by __________, such as Math & Trig, Statistical, Financial, Logical, Date & Time, and Text. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

13 Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
Types of Functions Mathematical functions and trigonometric functions: These functions manipulate ____________ data in a worksheet. Some mathematical operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, do not require functions. Mathematical and trigonometric functions are particularly useful when you need to determine values such as logarithms, factorials, sines, cosines, tangents, and absolute values. You used a mathematical and trigonometric function when you created a formula with the ________ function. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

15 Types of Functions (continued)
Statistical functions: Statistical functions are used to describe ______________________. For example, statistical functions can determine the average, standard deviation, or variance of a range of data. Statistical functions can also determine the number of values in a range, the largest value in a, range, and the smallest value in a range. Examples are AVERAGE, MIN, and MAX. All the statistical functions contain a ___________ for the argument. The range is the body of numbers the statistics will describe. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

16 Types of Functions (continued)
Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

17 Types of Functions (continued)
Financial functions: Financial functions are used to analyze ________ and __________. The primary financial functions are future value, present value, and payment. For these functions to return the correct value, the payment and the interest rate must have the same time period. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

18 Types of Functions (continued)
Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

19 Types of Functions (continued)
Logical functions, such as the IF function, display text or values if certain conditions exist. In the IF function, the first argument sets a condition for comparison, called a ______________. The second argument determines the value that appears in the cell if the logical test is true. The third argument determines the value that appears in the cell if the logical test is false. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

20 Types of Functions (continued)
Example: a teacher might use the IF function to determine whether a students has passed or failed a course. The formula =IF(C4>60, “Pass”, “Fail”) returns PASS if the value in cell C4 is greater than 60. The formula returns FAIL if the value in C4 is not greater than 60. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

21 Types of Functions (continued)
Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

22 Types of Functions (continued)
Date and Time functions: Functions can be used to insert dates and times. For example, date and time functions can be used to convert serial numbers to a month, a day, or a year. A date function can also be used to insert the ________________ or the current date and time. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

23 Types of Functions (continued)
Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

24 Types of Functions (continued)
Text functions: Text functions are used to format and work with cell contents. A text function can be used to ______________ in a cell to all uppercase or lowercase letters. Text functions can also be used to repeat data contained in another cell. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

25 Types of Functions (continued)
Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

26 Chapter 5 Assessment Questions
Directions: Add the Chapter 5 Assessment questions to your Excel Assessments. Type the questions and bold your answers. Save and upload. List and describe the three parts of a function. Explain what you can do with the Insert Function Dialog box. Explain how Formula AutoComplete can be helpful. List and describe the various types of functions we discussed in these notes. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
