The Beauty of Natural Woolly and Curly hair
Natural Hair Care The Beauty of Natural Woolly and Curly hair
2
Why do you think our hair is wooly or curly?
If we look at the roots we can find some little “holes” from where the hair grows. These are called follicles.
3
Why do you think our hair is wooly or curly?
It turns out that the shape of our follicles is a major determinant of our hair texture. The follicle of curly hair adopts an oval shape. The flatter the oval is, the curlier/woollier the hair will be. If you were to look at the follicle of straight hair, you would find it is round. Another contributing factor to a hair’s curl is the way the follicle tunnels into the scalp.
4
Does hair texture matter?
5
How does our hair grow? There are 3 main stages of a hair growth cycle: Anagen- active growth stage that can last up to a average of 6 years and is genetically predetermined. Catagen- transition phase in which hair stops growing and gets ready to fall off. Telogen- phase in which “old” hair falls off.
6
What can we do to make it grow faster and stronger?
Remember this video? What do you think grass needs to grow healthy? Good soil Water and Nutrients Good Maintenance The same is needed for our hair: The soil is represents our Scalp where the follicles are. The water and nutrients represents Moisture to keep hair hydrated and Protein, Vitamins and Minerals to keep hair nourished. The good maintenance is when we Trim when necessary and Give it what it Needs.
7
Good Soil -Scalp Make sure to eat a balanced healthy diet, Exercise
Get enough sleep Drink the recommended 1.5L of water a day
8
Good Soil -Scalp Do not use heavy products on scalp often, if hair is in need of heavy product application apply it 2 inches from roots.
9
Good Soil -Scalp Wash hair in sections and whenever needed. Too much or too little washing are both damaging. Most naturals wash their hair once a week or every two weeks. (Beware this does not apply if you do intensive exercise often)
10
Good Soil -Scalp Use low sulphate or no sulphates, no mineral oil bad alcohols and silicones products whenever possible.
11
Good Soil -Scalp Do not use relaxers or texturizers, neither use products with harsh preservatives such as formaldehyde and parabens. Colour damages hair severely try henna instead. (I talk by experience)

Deep condition often at least once a week Use a good moisturizer and sealer

Good Maintenance Our scalp's natural oils are called sebum. Sebum travel s quickly on straight hair but slow on wooly hair hence our hair is less greasy.- A satin lined pillow or satin cap for nigh time helps prevent moisture loss and keeps hairstyles put!
17
Good Maintenance Create a Hair Regimen that works for your hair and keep to it as long as your hair needs do not change.
18
Do not comb hair dry Mist with water whenever needed Finger detangle or use a wide tooth comb in sections Use quality products and ingredients
19
Good Maintenance Use and abuse of protective styles with your own hair or head wraps (satin or with satin scarf underneath) as these are the best options. It will save you headaches and your edges on the long run. There is unlimited choice of styles!
