RADIATION SOURCES AND GENERATING EQUIPMENT IN SIERRA LEONE BY MILFORD HANCILES NUCLEAR SAFETY AND RADIATION PROTECTION AUTHORITY (NSRPA) MINISTRY OF ENERGY

OUTLINE INTRODUCTION LEGAL BASIS TYPES OF FACILITIES
GENERATING EQUIPMENT RADIATION SOURCES CHANGELLENGES CONCLUSION
3
INTRODUCTION This presentation will consists of radiation sources and generating equipment that are used and the types of facilities including (mines, industries, factories, and hospitals) and at the port in Sierra Leone .This also will include the number of sources or generating equipment used by each facility and the total number of sources and generating equipment that is in our inventory system which is the Regulatory Authority Information System (RAIS) 3.2 web. Challenges that are face in its operation.
4
Legal Basis According to Section 5 Subsection 2 (ix) of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act 2012.which states : To establish and maintain, in cooperation with other governmental bodies, a system of control for the export and import of nuclear and other radioactive materials, sources, equipment and information technology necessary for the effective exercise of its functions under this Act; PART VIII–LICENSING AND RELATED PROVISIONS According to Section 29 The Authority shall adopt all necessary measures including a system of licensing, to control the export and import, transit and transhipment of any nuclear material, equipment or technology in order to protect the safety and security of Sierra Leone.

RADIATION SOURCES 12 – Facilities in total using radiation sources
3- Facilities using fixed density gauges These are Mining Companies having a total of 46 gauges between them 5- Facilities using mobile density gauges Construction and oil companies a total of 88 gauges. 2 – Facilities using Levelling Gauges Bottling companies a total of 6 gauges. ( 3 Gauges each) 2 – Facilities using sealed sources for research 2 Universities with 1 source each with low level activity

An X-ray Scanner of 6Mev at the port of entry
6 X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometers (XRF) use by Mining companies No Research Reactor No Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) FOR THE PURPOSE OF INVENTORY ONLY Baggage Scanners used at the : Airport Ministerial Buildings Customs And other offices for security checks DENTAL FACILITIES There are Six(6) different Dental Facilities

CHANGELLENGES Customization of RIAS for authorization
There are some sources still not in our inventory due to facilities that have been operating before the existence of the regulatory body. The poor internet access in my country makes it very difficult for us to sometimes access the inventory system since the RAIS 3.2 web uses internet connection to operate with it.
10
CONCLUSION The Regulatory Body which is the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (NSRPA) is still on an ongoing search and secure of radioactive sources mostly orphan sources, disuse sources and find out about facilities using nuclear or radioactive material that are not in our inventory through out the whole country. Memorandum of understanding between : Customs Police Office of the National Security (ONS) So that generating equipment, radioactive sources and nuclear materials entering and leaving the country should be authorize by the regulatory authority.
