1 SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF-CONCEPT
What is the difference and how do they affect each other?

2 Definitions Self-concept is what you know about yourself
What type of person am I? (talkative or shy, organized or unorganized What are my strengths and weaknesses What kinds of things am I interested in? How do I identify myself? (musician, athlete, philanthropist, socialite, artist, intellectual, easy-going) Self-esteem is the way we feel about ourselves Do I feel good about the overall person that I am?

3 How are Self-Concept and Self-Esteem related?
By being realistic about the type of person we are and about our strengths and weaknesses, we are able to evaluate ourselves and to make personal changes in order to better ourselves. This will enable us to feel good about ourselves. An inaccurate self-concept leads to inappropriate goals, changes, and choices.

4 Understanding yourself
Answer the Personal Inventory questions (included on the coinciding lesson plan)

5 Reflection Write a short essay about what you learned (or already knew) about yourself according to the Personal Inventory that illustrates who you are. Include things that you like about yourself and/or things that you would like to change about yourself.

6 Wrap Up By understanding yourself and making positive changes in your life, you will build self-confidence that will enable you to feel better about yourself. Any Questions?
