Exercise Module 3a Identifying and Prioritising Climate Change Adaptation Measures Country, Date, Presenter
2
Objective The objective of the exercise is to:
Identify suitable adaptation measures for the prioritised risks of the case company Rank these risks with a Multi-Criteria-Analysis to identify the most relevant adaptation measures ToC - Module 3a Exercise

Guidance for Facilitators – Identifying and Prioritising Climate Change Adaptation Measures Plan approx. 1 hour for the exercise You need to bring the following materials: Case company handouts Pens & markers Flipcharts ToC - Module 3a Exercise

Introduction to STEP 1 – Identifying adaptation measures
In STEP 1 of this exercise you will identify and briefly describe adaptation measures which the case company could implement to address the previously identified risks. At least for one negative effect you should try to identify more than one potential adaptation measure. Think of different types of impact that an adaptation measure could address to prevent the occurrence of negative effects for the case company You can take ideas from the case company description but also be creative and come up with new adaptation measures based on your own experience. For example: The blocking of transport routes due to landslides could be prevented by using a better forecast system, by having a system of alternative routes, or by implementing an early shipment system ToC - Module 3a Exercise

Guidance for Participants – Identifying adaptation measures
For this task you should Join your consultant group Read the handout and identify adaptation measures the company has already thought about In addition, come up with your own ideas how some of the risks could be addressed Write down the risks on notecards and collect additional information in the Excel You have 20 min for this task Identified negative effects Adaptation measures Spoilage of fruits due to flooding Store the fruits on higher grounds Build floodgates Absenteeism of workers due to vectorborne diseases Implement an immunisation campaign ToC - Module 3a Exercise

Introduction to STEP 2 – Prioritising adaptation measures
In STEP 2 of this exercise you will rank the identified adaptation measures which the case company could implement to address the previously identified risks. By ranking the risks according to different criteria, you can make sure that those adaptation measures are implemented first which are most beneficial for the company. There are different categories in which you can rank the measure, i.e. effectiveness, feasibility, positive side- effects and negative side-effects. You are also free to come up with additional categories Scores are given from 0 to 5: if a measure has a very high feasibility it receives a score of 5; if it has many positive side-effects it receives a score of 5; if it has no negative side-effects it also receives a score of 5 ToC - Module 3a Exercise

Guidance for Participants – Prioritising adaptation measures
For this task you should Join your consultant group Read the handout and derive clues on how the adaptation measures that the company has identified might score in the different categories If there is no information given or you have come up with own measures, take informed guesses on how the measures scores Write down the scores in the Excel; sum up all points for each measures to receive a final score; note the scores on the notecards and reorder them according to their score You have 30 min for this task Adaptation measures 34 Build floodgates 28 Store the fruits on higher grounds 27 Implement an immunisation campaign ToC - Module 3a Exercise

Guidance for Facilitators – Comparing results
After having completed the 2 steps, participants should present their results Ask a separate group to share the results for each step; ask the other groups too add and comment After completing the presentation ask the group: Do you think this approach can serve you to identify the key risks and opportunities of real companies? What could be challenges in applying this step to a real company? How would you identify the key climate trends for a real company? Allow 30 min for discussion and presentation ToC - Module 3a Exercise
12
Discussion – Comparing results
This exercise is about presenting the results to your peers and discussing how this is relevant for any real climate change adaptation assessment. After presenting the results discuss the following questions: Do you think this approach can serve you to prioritise adaptation measures? What could be challenges in applying this step to a real company? How would you identify adaptation measures for a real company? ToC - Module 3a Exercise
