Era of Good Feelings Federalists are almost non-existent
Democratic–Republicans were the only viable party Political differences fade away Sense of Nationalism spread throughout the country More trust in the federal government

2nd National Bank 1811- Democratic –Republicans did not renew the charter of the 1st Bank of the United States State banks made too many loans and put too much money in circulation Led to inflation and rise in price of goods 1816- The Democratic-Republican Congress and President Madison approved charter for 2nd National Bank in 1816 Restored stability to the US money supply and helped the growth of American businesses

Internal Improvements 1825 – 1850:
often referred to as the Age of Canals Allowed farmers in these regions to flow east & people/manufactured goods to go west By 1830, N.Y.C. had a population of over 200,000 “Let us bind the Republic together with a perfect system of road and canals” -John C Calhoun (Rep-SC)

Protective Tariff England was flooding America with manufactured goods
Better quality and lower price than American made products Wanted to prevent American industry from competing 1816- Congress and President Madison approved a tariff to increase cost of British goods Mean to protect American industry Southerners did not like it had little industry; relied on foreign goods Felt it only helped northern manufacturers

Would slavery be allowed to expand into the new territories? Speaker of the House, Henry Clay, helped negotiate a compromise

Missouri Compromise (1820)
Banned slavery north of the 36° parallel Set precedent that for every slave state, a free state must enter 36’30 Line Kept the balance of free & slave states
