Natural habitat Adult salmon live in the ocean. During mating season adult salmon swim up stream in fresh water rivers. Salmon lay their eggs where they were born. Caption: Sockeye Salmon in mating season.

Life Cycle The cycle starts when the spawning male and female head up stream to lay eggs. The female lays her eggs with the guard of the male. Then the eggs hatch and the babies are called frys. Then they turn into tiny salmon called smolt. When they are almost grown they will go out to the ocean and grow up to be adult salmon.

Looks Adult salmon are gray in the ocean. Mating salmon turn red in fresh water. Some salmon are brown with black spots on their tail in the ocean. The eggs of salmon are reddish-orange.

Food Chain #2 Adult salmon eat little fish.
Salmon eat algae when they are fry. Salmon are eaten by bears, otters, and raccoons.

Fun Facts Turns red in freshwater.
When mating, the salmon go to fresh water. Baby salmon eat algae when just hatched.
