Flowers What are flowers for? Have you ever thought about his?
They are the reproductive part of a plant. Another component of the shoot system of a flowering plant is the flower.

Flowers The flower is responsible for seed development and reproduction. We will talk about reproduction next lesson. We will cover seed development and dispersal next week.

Flowers There are four main flower parts in angiosperms or flowering plants: Sepals Petals Stamens (male part) Carpels/pistils (female part) "Clip art licensed from the Clip Art Gallery on DiscoverySchool.com"

Flower parts – write down these notes in your books
Sepal - green, leaf-like structure that protects the budding flower. Petal - colourful and often scented part of the flower that attracts insects. Stamen - the part of the flower that produces pollen. Consists of a filament and an anther. Anther - sac located at the tip of the filament that contains pollen. Filament - stalk that connects to and holds up the anther. Carpel/Pistil - consists of the stigma, style, and ovary. Stigma - the tip of the carpel that is sticky in order to collect pollen. Style - the slender, neck-like portion of the carpel that leads to the ovary. Ovary - structure at the base of the carpel that houses the ovule or egg.

Flower parts Take a look at this diagram in the top right.

Flowers When the ovule becomes fertilized, it develops into a seed. The ovary, which surrounds the seed, becomes the fruit. Flowers that contain both stamens and carpels are called perfect flowers. Flowers that are missing either stamens or carpels are called imperfect flowers. If a flower contains all four main parts (sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels), it is called a complete flower. Parts of a Flowering Plant: Summary In summary, angiosperms are differentiated from other plants by their flowers and fruit.

Flowers – Questions for discussion Think about these questions and we will talk about them at the end. Which part of the flower is female and which part is male? What are complete flowers? What is a type of flower that is imperfect? We will look at one in our practical. What are pollinators? What do petals do? Colourful and showy to attract pollinators. What are the most common colours of flowers? Why are these colours the most common?

What is next? Now go back to your wiki and print off the method for your practical and the worksheet. Begin doing your practical. I will help with the practical if you get stuck. We will have a discussion at the end.
