2. Where are these rights listed?
The Constitution of the United States establishes and protects the citizens’ fundamental rights and liberties.
Constitution = a “rule book” for citizens
Amendment – a change to the Constitution.

3. 1st amendment: Freedom of religion
Government may not establish an official religion, endorse an official religion, or unduly interfere with the free exercise of religion.

4. 1st amendment: Freedom of Speech
Individuals are free to express their opinions and beliefs.

5. 1st amendment: Freedom of Press
The press has the right to gather and publish information, including that which criticizes the government.

6. 1st amendment: Freedom of assembly
Individuals may peacefully gather.

7. 1st amendment: freedom of petition
Individuals have the right to make their views known to public officials.

8. Due Process Amendments
Due Process- fair treatment in the judicial system.
Due process is focused on in the 5th and 14th amendment.

9. 5th amendment
The Fifth Amendment protects citizens from being held for committing a crime unless they have been charged by the police. It also guarantees due process, which means that the state and the country have to respect a citizen’s legal rights.

10. 14th amendment
The Fourteenth Amendment declares no state may deprive persons born or naturalized in the United States equal protection of the laws.

11. Few rights, if any, are considered absolute.
Just because you have these freedoms, does not mean that they can be abused without consequences.
Rights of an individual CAN NOT interfere with the rights of another individual.
