2 Reducing the pressure on hospitals: A report on the value of occupational therapy
The College published a report in all four UK nations With quantitative and qualitative evidence gathered from services around the UK Demonstrating innovative working – with occupational therapists working in A&E departments, ambulance services and GP practices all working toward a shared goal of keeping people out of hospital, reducing the length of stay in hospital and ensuring a timely and safe discharge The second report will be launched in July, looking at the deployment of occupational therapists in primary and social care settings to improve care for older people.

Increased partnerships between occupational therapy services and ambulance services to improve response to falls. 4. All multi-disciplinary teams for admission and discharge to include occupational therapists. 1. To ensure timely and successful discharge, commissioners and providers must support the development of therapy-led services. All rapid response and acute and emergency care services must have occupational therapists embedded within multi-disciplinary teams. 5. 2. 3. Commissioners to include occupational therapists in funding for out-of-hours services. 6. Occupational therapists must be central to reablement and community support programmes.

4 78% Demonstrating the value of occupational therapy
The reports showed the following… 78% of people who received an innovative joint assessment between a paramedic and an occupational therapist were able to remain at home East Lancashire NHS Hospitals Trust and North West Ambulance Service – FRS Service

5 96% of these return to their own home rather than a care home
Barnet Hospital Rapid Response Therapy Service 83% patients seen by an occupational therapist in ED avoid being admitted 96% of these return to their own home rather than a care home

6 Occupational therapy- led stroke unit
Stroke unit led by Consultant occupational therapist Stroke unit led by Medical Consultant Median length of stay: days 2015 – 27 days Median length of stay: days 2015 – 59 days Patients reported increased satisfaction and improved ability to engage in their chosen occupations, including ability to return to roles at home, at work and socially.

7 It is absolutely critical that members:
Share the reports with their managers, head of therapy services and senior leaders across their organisations. Inform the communications team where they work so that they can include it on their website, newsletters and social media channels.
