Romeo and Juliet 4.21 “And, If Thou Darest, I’ll Give Thee Remedy” Identifying Subtext & Conflict
Purpose: -To interpret a subtext -To analyze conflict in drama -To evaluate characters’ choices -To Review terminology

Group work for six! Each student has the same line, “That one is mine.” Each student will be saying the line differently, depending on the scenario. Read your card silently and consider how to deliver the line. In each group, students should take turns saying the line with the appropriate expression to convey the scenario (i.e. “oral interpretation”). The rest of the group should determine the emotion the speaker is feeling.

Getting to Understand “Subtext”
Turn to page 297 in your SpringBoard book. (YOUR subtext would be either, “Ugh, did I bring that?” or “Not that book again.” Write your own explanation of subtext and give an example. Why is it important to keep the subtext in mind when you are performing/reading a scene? Why is it important to recognize (see) what people are feeling as you hear their words?

Subtext Let’s look back at the exchange between Juliet and Lady Capulet in Act III scene iv. What are Juliet’s true thoughts/feelings? What does Lady Capulet hear Juliet saying? Go through the text and note: Line # Juliet Means Lady Capulet Hears

Act IV, scene i Read Act IV, scene i. Juliet has a conversation with Paris during which she must hide her true feelings. Use sticky notes to mark the text by writing the subtext – Juliet’s true thoughts – which you find “between the lines.”

Extra Fun(ny) Activity - Pantomime
Pantomime either: the things Juliet would rather do than marry Paris, or the Friar’s plan for Juliet. Remember that in pantomime, you act out something without using words. Your audience must guess the action from your movements and expressions.

Quickwrite page 298 in SB In a well-constructed paper of 2-3 paragraphs, evaluate the Friar’s plan for Juliet. In other words, describe his plan and argue whether the plan is “good or bad,” feasible or “not doable.” Be sure to explain the subtext of his plan. What is he thinking? Does his thinking seem wise? Why or why not? Answer in 2-3 paragraphs on page 298. Turn in.
