Improving Intersection Performance
The Peek ATC Delivers

Better Intersection Performance with an ATC
Today I will briefly describe a few tools in the Peek ATC controller(s) that can help you move more traffic, with improved safety. Jon Meusch, PE, Northwest Signal, PEEK, SIGNAL GROUP

INTRODUCTION Latest ATC Deployment
Hi, I’m Jon Meusch from Northwest Signal, based in Portland Oregon. My recent ATC experience has been in Minneapolis, where ATCs control the signal displays. Revenue service started June 14th. Latest ATC Deployment Green Line, Minneapolis, MN, June 2014

Freescale Power Quix 2 at 300 MHz
ESSENTIAL ATC ATTRIBUTES 300 MHz is needed to continue to properly time the signal displays, while time-stamping all of the high resolution data controllers with a 25 MHz processor are completely inadequate. A BIG processor: Freescale Power Quix 2 at 300 MHz

ESSENTIAL ATC ATTRIBUTES
The data needs a place to go, unless it is constantly be pulled from the controller. Peek very cleverly placed an SD card in their ATC. Large memory capacity: SD Card support for up to 2 GB

Developed in concert with Purdue University and INDOT
ATC OFFERS HIGH RESOLUTION DATA Developed in concert with Purdue University and INDOT Resolution of log entries is 0.1 seconds Started with Volume/Occupancy Expanded to include comprehensive areas of controller operations… If quality data is available it’s mush easier to optimize signal operation. Peek was a teammate in the developing of the InDOT standard and an early adopter of the technology.

ATC OFFERS HIGH RESOLUTION DATA
This is the controller interface for the High Res data logging. A user could enable just Volume and Occupancy, and be limited to what some of our competitors offer, or the data collection can be widened to include almost every area of controller operations. Selection of High Resolution Data Types

ATC OFFERS PREPROCESSED DATA
Volumes, by Detector Events, All Types Phase/Ped Usage Phase Terminations Phase/Ped Delay Times LOS, by Phase LOS, by Unit Transit Priority Efficiency Coordination History % Arrivals on Green Platoon Ratios Adaptive Control History If High Res data seems a little intimidating, or if time doesn’t permit the data analysis, we offer access to all sorts of preprocessed data. All it takes is to access the controller front panel or a remote connection to collect the data and it’s viewable in seconds. Data Types Ready for Immediate Viewing

ATC PREPROCESSED DATA EXAMPLE #1
Let’s say, for example, an unhappy motorist calls to complain about a traffic signal. He/she says, “I waited at 1st and Main Northbound for 5 minutes before my light turned green.” You ask, “What time did this take place.” They say, “Oh, about 2:25.” You take their name and number. You log onto the signal network and collect the Service-Delay log from the controller. A few moments later you know that they waited exactly 105 seconds.
10
ATC PREPROCESSED DATA EXAMPLE #2
Later the planning department wants to know the Level of Service at a particular intersection. Maybe the intersection isn’t accessible via a network, but you’re able to stop by the intersection and look at the Service log. At its worst you find that it hits LOS C with an estimated 35 second delay to the average vehicle.
11
ATC PREPROCESSED DATA EXAMPLE #3
Later you have to review the work of a consultant that re-coordinated the signals down Main Street. A few mouse clicks or button presses are all that separates you from % Arrival on Green data. Hopefully the “after” values exceed the “before” values.
12
ATC PREPROCESSED DATA EXAMPLE #4
Perhaps you’re concerned about the overall green distribution at an intersection. A quick look at the Measure of Effectiveness log will show which phases are Maxing or Forcing too often.

Better Intersection Performance with an ATC
SUMMARY Better Intersection Performance with an ATC The ATC is a superior hardware platform Data visibility is EXCELLENT The feature set far EXCEEDs national standards
