DO NOW MONDAY 1. DRAW THE FOLLOWING SCENE: Draw three houses on the right in the middle of the page. Each house has four windows and a door. On the roof of one of the houses there are two people and a dog. Draw two trees on the left in the middle. At the top of the picture draw some clouds. The clouds look grey and it’s raining a lot. In the sky there is a helicopter. Around the houses there is water. The water touches the top windows of the houses....” 2. TELL WHAT YOU THINK IS GOING ON IN THE SCENE.

Classroom Expectations
ENTERING THE CLASSROOM Enter the classroom quietly, Level 1 voice, through the door labeled ENTER Sharpen pencil if necessary Sit in assigned/designated seat Begin working in your journal on the DO NOW that is posted on the board.
3
Classroom Expectations
TEACHER-LED INSTRUCTION Look at and listen to the teacher Take notes, if applicable Raise your hand if you would like to contribute to the discussion or have a question
4
Classroom Expectations
GROUP/LAB WORK Be respectful to all group/lab members All members are expected to do their job and contribute to the activity
5
Classroom Expectations
INDEPENDENT WORK Work diligently on assignment, Voice Level 0, unless instructed otherwise Sharpen pencil/throw something away ONLY when given permission
6
Classroom Expectations
EXITING THE CLASSROOM Complete and hand in the Exit Slip to the teacher (if applicable) Clean up your assigned area before leaving the room Leave quietly when dismissed by the teacher through the door labeled EXIT

TODAY’S PLAN Compare and contrast constructive and destructive forces. Identify and define different types of natural disasters and their causes. TODAYS DO Briefly discuss constructive and destructive forces. Video about natural disasters and answer questions.
8
Constructive & Destructive Forces
9
Two Types of Forces Destructive Constructive
10
Destructive Forces Destructive Forces: processes that destroy landforms. 2 types: Slow (weathering) and Fast (Erosion) Ex. landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods
11
Weathering Weathering: a slow, destructive force that breaks rocks into smaller pieces called sediments. Can by physical (mechanical) or chemical. Keywords: wear down, break apart
12
Mechanical weathering: the breaking of rock into smaller pieces by forces due to gravity, ice, plant roots, or other physical forces.
13
Rock split apart by Mechanical weathering (freeze and thaw)
14
Chemical Weathering: the changing of materials in a rock by chemical processes.
15
Erosion Erosion: the destructive movement (quick) of materials away from one place by wind, water, ice and gravity. Wave Erosion- caused by water Wind Erosion (Dust Storm)
16
Landslides Landslides: occur when gravity quickly pulls rock and dirt downhill.
17
Floods Floods: a great flow of water over an area that is usually dry land.
18
Earthquakes Earthquakes: the shaking of Earth’s surface caused by the release of energy along a fault. San Andreas Fault, California
19
Volcanic Eruptions Volcano: an opening in the Earth’s crust through which steam, lava and ashes erupt. Cause both destructive and constructive changes to landforms.
20
Mount St. Helens Saint Helen’s Before Saint Helen’s After
21
volcanic mountain itself
Volcanoes can be destructive, but also constructive… Constructive: island Destructive: destruction of vegetation, the volcanic mountain itself
22
Constructive Forces Constructive forces: forces that build up an existing landform or create a new one. Caused by: water, gravity, wind and glaciers. Ex: deposition, volcanic eruptions, convergent boundaries (mountain building)
23
Deposition Deposition: the placing of materials in a new place (constructive force). Ex. Sandbars
24
Water Deposition River Delta- Deposits of sediment at the mouth of the Mississippi River creating new land called a delta.
25
Wind Deposition Sand Dunes- created when sand is moved by wind
Desert Sand Dunes Ocean Sand Dunes
26
Convergent Boundary: creates mountains
