Figurative Language Simile, Metaphor, Idiom, Onomatopoeia, Hyperbole and Alliteration By: Barb Blankenship ELA.5.40 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. Interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors in context. Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.

2 Simile and Metaphor A metaphor compares two Items without using the words like or as. A simile compares two things by using the words like or as. Examples: The snow sparkled like diamonds. I am under an avalanche of homework. The paper is as white as snow. Love is a rose.

3 Idiom An idiom is a saying that does not make literal, logical, or grammatical sense. An idiom may only be understood by people in the same culture. Examples: It’s time to hit the hay. He is burning the candle at both ends. She has butterflies in her stomach. It was raining cats and dogs.

4 Onomatopoeia Splat Onomatopoeia is a word that ‘makes’ the sound.
Examples: The snake hissed at the man. The bear growled. The lion roared at the zebra. Splat

5 Hyperbole A hyperbole is an exaggeration used to make a point.
Hyperboles are not meant to be taken literally. Her backpack weighs a ton! I am so hungry I could eat a horse. I will die if I can’t go to my friend’s house. TON

6 Alliteration An alliteration is a phrase that uses the same sound at the beginning of each word. Alliterations can be tongue twisters. Used for emphasis and effect. Bouncing bunnies bring smiles to babies The really red rhino rollerblades rapidly on the roadway. Freddy finally found his fishing friends.
