3 Spelling and Grammar Checking
A blue wavy line represents a grammar mistake A red wavy line represents a misspelled word This is an optional component. By turning if off (when it isn’t needed), you have more typing area.

4 Correcting Spelling Errors
Spelling can be corrected manually by the user or by selecting Spelling and Grammar from the Proofing Group on the Review Ribbon

5 When there is a mispelled word, the wavy line will disappear when the misspelled word is corrected or when ignore is selected on the shortcut menu.

6 Spelling and Grammar Dialog Box
Select the Spelling & Grammar command in the proofing group to bring up the Spelling and Grammar Dialog Box.

7 Spelling and Grammar Dialog Box Functions
Ignore: Means skip this this time, but stop at the next occurrence to check spelling. Ignore All: Do not stop to check ALL occurrences of the word. Add to Dictionary: This is a word that is spelled correctly, but is not recognized by the Word dictionary. Use this option to add so in the future it will recognize it.

8 Spelling and Grammar Dialog Box Functions
Change: Change this spelling of the word to the suggested spelling. Change All: Change all occurrences of the word to the suggested spelling.

9 Options Command This can also be accessed from the Back Stage View
Auto Correct Option This can also be accessed from the Back Stage View

10 Auto Correct Feature Type in the Replace box what you want to replace. It can be an abbreviation of something you type frequently. In the WITH box type what the auto correct should replace it with.

11 Word 2013 compares the words that appear in the document to words found in the standard dictionary.

12 To accept the item, click the item and the item is corrected.
Right Clicking to Correct Misspelled Words By right clicking on the mispelled word, suggestions for correcting the error will appear on the Shortcut Menu. To accept the item, click the item and the item is corrected.

17 Translating Text Click on the Mini Translator icon to turn it on and off. If you point to a word, the translation will appear in a small window. It also includes a PLAY button so the user can hear an audio version of the word or phrase.

21 How to Use the Thesaurus
Once the Thesaurus is selected, it will bring up a window pane with suitable options. The user should then decide the best choice. The Thesaurus may also be selected by right clicking on the word.

25 Wildcards A wildcard is a symbol that takes the place of an unknown character or set of characters. A question mark ? can be used to substitute for any individual character. Example: s?t Would find sit, sat, set or any word that started with s ended with t and had one letter in between. Source:

26 Wildcards On the other hand, an asterisk * can be used to substitute for any string of characters. Example: s*t would find sit, sat, soot, stilt, any word that began with s and ended with t no matter how many characters are in between.

29 Inserting Date and Time
From the Insert tab Checkbox makes it a field rather than static. What does this mean? Look in the Text group

What is a field? When inserted as a field, the date and time will automatically update. Select Insert Tab and Quick Parts

31 A field changes to the current date when the document opens.
Static means the date will stay the same every time you open it.

33 Alternative Method Date and Time can also be inserted using the Insert Date and Time buttons on the Header and Footer Ribbon

34 Tech Tip The date and time that is inserted into the document is dependent on the date and time of the computer. This can be updated through the computer’s Control Panel.
