3 What is an adverb?

4 An adverb tells you more about a verb (doing word)
It tells you where, why, or how much something happens or is done.

5 Many adverbs are made by adding –ly onto the end of an adjective.
Kind The boy kindly carried the old lady’s bags. Strange It was strangely quiet in the village.

6 Can you make a sentence using these adverbs?

7 Adverbs can also tell you when something happens.
Our friends arrived yesterday. The holidays will soon be over.

10 Conjunctions

11 The cat is brown and the cat is fat.
A conjunction helps us join two short sentences together to make a longer one. The cat is brown. Conjunction The cat is fat. The cat is brown and the cat is fat.

12 and, while, since, but, so that, when, because, though, if, and or.
Here is a list of the conjunctions we have just read: and, while, since, but, so that, when, because, though, if, and or.

13 Kinds of conjunctions Coordinate conjunctions
conjunctions which connect two equal parts of a sentence The most common ones are and, or, but so

14 and is used to join or add words together in the sentence.
They ate and drank. or is used to show choice or possibilities as in the sentence. He will be here on Monday or Tuesday. but is used to show opposite or conflicting ideas as in the sentence She is small but strong. so is used to show result as in the sentence I was tired so I went to sleep.

15 2. Subordinate conjunctions connect two parts of a sentence that are not equal and will be discussed more in another class after before unless although if until as since when because than while

16 3. Correlative conjunctions  pairs of conjunctions that work together both . . .and either or neither nor not only but also
