General Information Maryland was founded in 1632, officially by Sir George Calvert, although unofficially by his heir, Cecil Calvert. The southern colony was founded on the basis of a safehaven for the Roman Catholic population of England, as only the Anglican church was permitted in England at the time.

Founder Maryland was founded by Sir George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, to “protect” English Roman Catholics, which were being persecuted in England. Calvert served among many prestigious positions for the English crown, such as being a member of Parliament, and Secretary of State of King James I’s rule.

Culture Maryland wasn’t settled by any gender primarily, nor race, and was mostly made up of Protestants, despite its Roman Catholic founding. The colony was set up proprietarily (as a proprietary colony), dictated over by Cecil Calvert, the heir of Sir George Calvert The current flag of the state of Maryland, adopted by the state in The design is based off of the coats of arms of the Crossland family (George Calvert’s mother’s family) , and the Calvert family, the family to found the colony.

Economy Maryland’s economy, like most of the thirteen colonies, was supported by the growth and sales of “cash crops”, such as tobacco. These crops were usually grown on large areas of farmland, or plantations. These plantations were operated with the use of slave labor. Families with many children would also run small or medium sized farms, although not plantations.

Geography and Climate Maryland has a generally diverse geography, with land types varying from murky swamps to awe-inspiring mountains, and the climate generally depends on the geography of each area.
