Building Organic molecules #1
The black beads are Carbon – all 4 holes must be filled The white small beads are hydrogens – they only bond in one place and are used to fill the empty bonds of carbon
2
Follow these directions
The first slide will give you the name of what you are to build and maybe a hint. The answer is on the next slide. Do not look ahead until you have built the model This is what your test will be like on the 12/13. Working with a partner, building models. If you just flip though the powerpoint and do not build the models you are only making the test harder for yourselves.
3
1. Pentane Use the long sticks between the carbons and the short sticks between the hydrogens and carbons.
4
Pentane has 5 carbons with 3 hydrogen atoms on each side and two hydrogen atoms on each of the three in the middle
5
2) 1-hexene Hint - Use the springs for the double bond
6
1-hexene has 6 carbon atoms with a double bond after the first carbon
1-hexene has 6 carbon atoms with a double bond after the first carbon. The springs will push away from each other and form 2 arches.
7
3) 2-methyl butane
8
Butane is a 4 carbon chain – methyl is a one carbon branch off the 2nd carbon. Be sure the number and placement of hydrogen atoms is correct
9
4) 4-methyl-2-pentyne Remember to use springs for the multiple bonds
10
Remember it is 3 dimensional and can be flipped one way or the other
Remember it is 3 dimensional and can be flipped one way or the other. Always number in one direction with the double or triple bond being the lowest number. C 3 5 4 2 1
11
5) Cis-2-butene
12
Cis means the same- the carbons should be on the same side after the double bond. But = 4 carbons with the double bond after the second bond.
13
6) cyclohexane
14
Cyclo- is a prefix for circle hex- is six carbons and ane- is all single bonds
15
7) 2,2 –dimethyl butane
17
Trans 2,3 dichloro 2 - butene
The green beads are chlorine Trans 2,3 dichloro 2 - butene
