Literary Devices Simile- Compare using like or as. Metaphor-Comparison Personification- Giving human characteristics to non- human items Idiom- word combinations that kids use which have a different meaning than the literal meanings of each word Oxymoron-contradictory terms appear in conjunction Imagery-represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses Hyperbole-exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. Onomatopoeia-the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named Symbolism- use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities Assonance-repetition of the sound of a vowel. Alliteration-the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. Foreshadow- refers to the use of indicative word or phrases and hints that set the stage for a story to unfold and give the reader a hint of something that is going to happen without revealing the story or spoiling the suspense. Foreshadowing is used to suggest an upcoming outcome to the story. Flashback- wherein the author depicts the occurrence of specific events to the reader, which have taken place before the present time the narration is following, or events that have happened before the events that are currently unfolding in the story.
