4 Bible Challenge Gnosticism "having knowledge", gnōsis, knowledge) A person attains salvation by learning secret knowledge of their spiritual essence: a divine spark of light or spirit. They then have the opportunity to escape from the prison of their bodies at death. Their soul can ascend to be reunited with the Supreme God at the time of their death. (John 14:6) Pantheism: The belief that the universe and nature is the totality of everything and is identical with divinity. Everything composes an all-encompassing, god. Pantheists do not believe there is one God (John 14:6) Asceticism: The practice of self-denial in an attempt to draw closer to God. It may include such disciplines as fasting, celibacy, wearing simple or uncomfortable clothing, poverty, sleep deprivation, and in extreme forms, flagellation and self-mutilation. 1Corinthians 6:19-20: But not to the point of thinking your body is evil and something that needs to be controlled violently Genesis 3:5 "For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.“ - Satan

8 Baptism Part 2: THE IMPORTANCE OF BAPTISM Why should I be baptized?
Why should I be baptized? 1. Jesus set the ______EXAMPLE_______ to follow. “At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.” Mark 1:9 2. Jesus ______COMMANDS_______ His followers to be baptized. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of The Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20a What is the meaning of baptism? 1. It _______IDENTIFIES_________ me with Christ in His death and resurrection. “...having been buried with him in baptism and raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, who raised Him from the dead.” Colossians 2:12 2. It _______ANNOUNCES__________ my new life as a Christian. “By our baptism, then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life.” Romans 6:4(GN) “When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same any more. A new life has begun!” II Corinthians 5:17(LB) 3. It ______DECLARES_______ my obedience to Christ. “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15

9 Baptism Key Point: Remember, baptism does not wash away your sin. Only Jesus can do that! It does not make you believe—it shows that you already believe in Christ. Like a wedding ring, it tells others that you are joined to Christ and Christ alone. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8, 9 What is the method of baptism? 1. Jesus was baptized by ______IMMERSION_______ “As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water...” Matthew 3:16 2. The __NEW TESTAMENT___ believers were baptized by immersion. “Then both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water and Phillip baptized him. When they came up out of the water…” Acts 8:38-39 3. The word “baptize” means _____TO IMMERSE________ in water. The Greek word “baptize” means to immerse under water. Key Point: The reason for immersion is that it clearly describes burial and resurrection. When should I be baptized? Every person should be baptized ______AFTER_______ they have believed in Christ. “Those who believed ... were baptized ... that day.” Acts 2:41 “But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8:12

10 Lord’s Supper THE LORD’S SUPPER - Communion
Though Jesus never asked His disciples to remember His birth, He did tell them to remember His death and resurrection. These two ordinances or symbols (baptism and the Lord’s Supper) are visual reminders of His death for us. What is meaning of the Lord’s Supper? “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’ For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” I Corinthians 11:23-26 1. It is a _______SIMPLE ACT__________ not _______A CEREMONY__________. “...The Lord Jesus on the night He was betrayed, took bread...” verse 23 2. It is a _________REMINDER________ . “And when He had given thanks, He took it and said, ‘This is My body, which is for you, eat it in remembrance of Me.’ ” verse 24 3. It is a ________SYMBOL_________ . “In the same way, after supper He took the cup saying, ‘This is the new covenant in My blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’ ” verse 25 4. It is a _______STATEMENT OF FAITH__________ . “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes back.” verse 26 A backward look to the Cross and a forward look to His return.

11 Lord’s Supper Who should take the Lord’s Supper?
“When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same any more. A new life has begun!” II Corinthians 5:17(LB) 1. Those who are already _______BELIEVERS______ . “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, ‘Take it; this is My body.’ Then He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it. ‘This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.’ He said to them, ‘I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.’ When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” Mark 14:22-26 2. Those believers who have _____PREPARED________ themselves. “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.” I Corinthians 11:27-28 We prepare ourselves by: 1. __INWARD OBSERVATION___ “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.” I Corinthians 11:27 2. ___PERSONAL CONFESSION AND REPENTENCE__ “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9 3. __REAFFIRMATION OF COMMITMENT__ “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1 4. ___RECONCILIATION OF RELATIONSHIPS___ “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that you brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar…first go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:23-24
