5 Describe England Using Relative Location.
Located on an island Small (for a country) Off the western coast of Europe.

6 The English had been sailing to North America since John Cabot’s voyage in 1497.
It wasn’t until the late 1500s, however, that English rulers began taking more of an interest in the area.

7 England saw Spain getting rich from gold and silver from mines, as well as from ranching products.

8 England was anxious to share in this treasure.
England sea captains began to attack Spanish treasure ships carrying things back to Spain.

9 This caused serious conflicts between Spain and England.

10 It also greatly increased England’s wealth.
Stealing will do that for a country…

11 With the money England got by stealing from the Spanish, they invested in a strong navy.
Why would it be important for a country like England to have a strong army?

Pull Factors Certain Factors pulled people towards the New World. Opportunities To Own Land Many Jobs Available Plenty Of Room Hope Of More Religious Freedom

15 Critical Thinking What push and pull factors do you think were the most important to people living in England?

16 England is an island, so there was not a lot of space.

17 How? Why? After completing the “Unsolved Mystery” assignment:
Questions Of History A group of settlers from England (including the Dare family) About 400 years ago (Early 1600s) Which questions of history are missing from this chart? The settlers disappeared. How? Why?

18 Consider The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
Read The Lost Colony of Roanoke on page 157 of your textbook.

19 Consider The Lost Colony Of Roanoke

20 Consider The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
Why do you think they chose to settle on an island? What are two problems settlers in the first Roanoke settlement had? Why did the first settlers want to return to England? Do you think this settlement was a failure? Why or why not?

21 Consider The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
How do you think having families (instead of just men) affected the settlement? How do you think people viewed the birth of a new baby in the settlement? Why did John White return to England? Why did it take him so long to get back to Roanoke?

22 Consider The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
What do you think happened to the people of Roanoke? Do you think the mystery will ever be solved? Why or why not?

23 Roanoke Settlement founded
Timeline Roanoke Settlement founded St. Augustine founded

24 John White Walter Raleigh Neither John White nor Walter Raleigh had enough money to finance a third attempt for the Roanoke settlement.

25 What could England do to finance more voyages and settlements?
John White Walter Raleigh What could England do to finance more voyages and settlements?

26 Walter Raleigh financed the colony at Roanoke.
When the colony failed, he lost his investment. The English then decided that one person could not finance an entire colony.

27 They decided to form a joint-stock company.
This is where people put money into a project in order to earn profits. Each owner gets shares of stock and if the company makes money, the owners make money too.

28 This is similar to the way
things work today. People today buy stock in companies. As the company grows and makes more money, the stocks become worth more money, as well.

29 McDonald’s Stock Information
In 2009, a person could buy McDonald’s stock for $41.00. In 2015, that same stock would cost you $91.00 I bought 100 shares of McDonald’s stock in 2009. It only cost me $4,100. Today that same stock is worth $9,100. I made $5,000!

30 When McDonald’s makes money, the stock price goes up.
The people who invested in their business (those who bought stock), make money when the value of the stock increases.

31 What would happen if stock prices went down?

32 There’s always a risk…

33 The goal of the company was to start a colony in North America.
A group of wealthy investors from London, England formed the a joint-stock company called The Virginia Company. The goal of the company was to start a colony in North America.

34 They would need to find a ship and a crew.
After forming their company, what were some things that company had to do before they could establish a colony in the New World? They would need to find people who were willing to settle in a new place. They would need to find a ship and a crew. They would need to decide on a specific place to settle.

35 The Virginia Company Read pages 159 – 162 in your textbook.
As you read, develop 4-6 questions about the content being read. Take turns asking members of your group the questions you developed. Remember you must use textual evidence to support your answers.

36 charter schools have been given?
In 1606, King James granted the company a charter. A charter is a written contract. This particular charter gave the company the right to establish a colony. Apply What You Know… Now that you know the definition of charter, what do you type of contract do you think charter schools have been given? Charter schools have a contract from the state giving them the right to establish a school. King James

37 The first goal of the company was to make a profit by setting up
trading posts. Trading Posts were places where settlers and Native Americans met to trade goods.

38 The Virginia Company The company was given the following instructions:
Settle Virginia Find Gold Try To Find A Water Route To Asia

39 The people who volunteered to be a part of the Virginia Company’s new settlement knew that:
Both Roanoke Colonies Had Failed. All of the people from the 2nd Roanoke Colony were missing and assumed dead. The New World was far away. Many settlers were dying in an attempt to set up a new home.

40 What push factors may have encouraged these English settlers to try again to form a settlement in the New World?

41 The settlers who agreed to be a part of the Virginia Company’s Settlement were:
Pulled by the possibility of wealth (gold) Pulled by the idea of adventure and change Pushed out of England by hard times. Many of the people who agreed to go with the Virginia Company went as indentured servants.

42 How is this different from slavery?
Indentured Servants: Person who agrees to work for someone for a certain amount of time in exchange for the cost of the voyage to North America. How is this different from slavery?
