Essential Question How did Henry VIII impact the Renaissance Era?

Becoming King Born June 28, 1491
Originally was not suppose to be on the throne Church career with an education in theology, music, languages,poetry, and sports Older brother Arthur died of a sudden illness Henry VIII becomes king

First years as King Took the throne at age 17
Married his brother’s betrothed Catherine of Aragon He went to war with France three times in the first 15 years of this reign He was very interactive with his kingdom during this time Kept a festive court, hunting, jousting, writing, and playing music

Tension in the Church Martin Luther, a German monk, wrote 95 Theses that questioned the Catholics principles Enraged, King Henry VIII issued a book-length attack on Luther’s church reforms This earned him the name “Defender of the Faith” by Pope Leo X

Breaking from the Church
King Henry VIII wanted an annulment from Catherine of Aragon so that he could remarry King Henry VIII petitioned Pope Clement VII with the help of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey Later was rebuffed due to the pressure of Catherine’s nephew Henry VIII decided that he didn’t need the permission of the Pope to rule on issues affecting the Church of England with the English parliament and clergy backing him up

English Reformation After breaking away from the church, King Henry VIII was named Supreme Head of the Church by an Act of Parliament in 1534 Country was still Catholic but the Pope’s power ended Many of the wealthiest Catholics in England were the monasteries Were where the monks lived Loyal to the Pope They posed as a threat to Henry VIII Came the dissolution of the monasteries

Dissolution of the Monasteries
Monasteries were seen as the cornerstone of Papal authority in England and Wales Focal point of the king’s attack Finance was the reasoning behind the dissolution of the monasteries King Henry VIII spent a considerable amount of his inheritance and was going broke He dissolved the monasteries so he could make some money from it

Building the Navy Established the Royal Navy Five royal warships
Two of them were new four-mastered carracks By the time Henry died, the navy had over forty ships

Becoming King of Ireland
Henry VIII wanted Irish lords to surrender their land to him He would give it back only if they confirm under English law Irish lord could pass it on to its eldest son if they went along with it He brought them all off In 1541, the Irish Parliament gave Henry VIII the title of “King of Ireland” Irish nobility accepted this as it placed separately from England and Wales Also gave Ireland a sense of unity

Invasion of France and the Capture of Boulogne
Henry VIII and Charles V worked together to subjugate France in 1544 Original plan was for Charles V to attack across France by Champagne and Henry VIII to attack at Picardy and not stop until each of them reached Paris Their united might would dispose of the French monarchy Both men were very argumentative with each other Ended up beating France and Capturing of Boulogne

Death and Legacy Henry VIII died January 28, 1547
He left behind a wife Catherine Parr And three kids Mary I Elizabeth I Edward VI (his successor) He gave his nation a visible symbol of its nationhood Better government Useful navy Start of religious reforms and social improvement
