Objective of Study An Act of Parliament (PERSONS WITH DISABILITY ACT, 2006) was passed to provide disability friendly environment (Government of Ghana, 2006) Ghana has experienced interchange infrastructure for the past 20years. However, accessibility to such facilities by the disabled is questionable in Ghana Government has been chided for not providing accessible transportation infrastructure to its disabled populace (Katzman, 2010) The Sofoline Interchange which is still an on-going project is the first ever interchange to have an integrated pedestrian tunnel in Ghana 3% of Ghana’s population are faced with one or other forms of disability (Ghana Statistical Service, 2012) The study focused on assessing the accessibility of the Sofoline Interchange to Persons with Disability

Stakeholders understanding of “Equal Access” on road accessibility: “In simple term, equal access is providing access for both abled and disabled” (RS, Consultant). “Equal access is about inculcating or provision of access that can be accessible or usable to both normal and physically challenged people to form part of design and construction of project deliverables in both civil and building construction projects” (QS, Contractor). “Equal access is providing access for road users both able and physically challenged to use the road safely” (Department of Urban Roads, Kumasi). “Is to make sure that people with disability are able to use the road with very little effort” (Works Department, KMA). Accessibility of the Sofoline Interchange “Audio communications were not included in the design of the pedestrian tunnel” (RS, Consultant) 1 “Initial design had only steps in order to access the pedestrian tunnel” (QS, Contractor) 2 “The Sofoline Interchange is not designed to accommodate visually impaired” (Department of Urban Roads, Kumasi) 3

The definition for equal access has been limited to the physically challenged based on the Department of Urban Roads (Client Rep). Although forms of disabilities exist 1 The design of the Pedestrian tunnel failed to integrate disable friendly features beneficial to the Visually Impaired 2 3 The Sofoline Interchange is unfriendly to the Visually Impaired

It is recommended that:
Built Environment designers should develop checklist from accessible standards to guide them in designing 1 Disability studies should be incorporated in the curriculum of Built Environment Training and Tertiary institutions 2 3 Ghana Standard Authority in partnership with the Ghana Federation for the Disabled should developed a localised disability standards 11
