Definition of Film Editing = Piecing Together “takes” to Create Emotion Film editors create story by piecing together the film “takes” to create sequences that together become the films story when played in order. Montage (a French word which means to assemble), is the process of selecting, editing, and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous whole. Strong film editing makes you as a watching audience member: 1. “Feel” something = it creates a strong psychological and/or emotional response 2. Subconsciously your mind connects the dots and is constantly analyzing the images it sees - The brain accepts the pictures it sees and fills in the “gaps” as most films are not 100% realistic/literal 3. Keeps you brain interested in the film/story 4. YOU DON’T NOTICE THE FILM EDITING WHEN IT IS GOOD EDITING! - On average – 20 film edits are in a minute of film Story therefore, is truly told in the mind of the viewer!
23
TEST YOURSELF: Group Discuss What is the definition of film editing according to Miss Rogers? How can you tell if a film contains strong film editing? How do film editors create story? What is a montage? On average – how many film edits are in a minute of film?
