2 Act 2 sc. 9 (p.58-60) summary Although he will be deported, Marco can be bailed out for the wedding. Catherine and Rodolfo plead with Marco to promise he will not take revenge against Eddie. It seems Alfieri convinces Marco to accept the American way; reminding Marco that nothing gives one the right to take life.

4 Act 2, scene 10 p 60-64 Eddie demands absolute loyalty from Beatrice. He orders her not to go to the wedding. Catherine, astonished at Beatrice’s obedience, compares Eddie to vermin. Rodolfo arrives to tell Eddie that Marco is on his way. Eddie will face him to regain his good name. To Eddie’s face, Beatrice names the source of his discontent- his passion for Catherine. Eddie is shocked and twists in torment at a truth revealed as Marco arrives. During the fight, Eddie pulls a knife; Marco twists his arm around and the knife kills Eddie; he dies quite literally by his own hand. Even at the end, he makes Catherine feel guilty. Alfieri addresses the audience, recommending compromise yet confessing his admiration for Eddie
