Parents of the Freshman Class of 2013
Welcome Parents of the Freshman Class of 2013 Thank you for coming. I appreciate you taking time to come and hear about your students transition from 8th grade into high school. We look forward to forming a partnership with you and your child.

Orientation to Registration
Guyan Valley Counselors will be meeting with students individually to discuss courses available at the high school. Lincoln County High School Counselors will be scheduling a visit to Guyan Valley Middle School to pre-register students for 9th grade classes. What to expect…. Sometime after Spring break the high school counselors will be visiting to complete schedules for 9th grade. In the mean time, Megan and I will be meeting with each student to complete the two year student transition plan.

ISTP Forms Individual Student Transition Plan (2 year plan)
GV Counselors will complete this form with each student individually. A parent signature is required. The completed form will assist high school counselors with the registration process. Refer participants to handout. The ppt will address the various areas of this handout.

CAREER CLUSTERS & PATHWAYS
Business & Marketing Human Services Health Agriculture, Science & Natural Resources Engineering & Technology Fine Arts & Humanities Professional Planning to attend a 4 year college or beyond Skilled Planning to attend a 2 year community college, technical school, military, or immediately enter into the workforce Megan's slide- Students will first choose a career cluster then pathway. The career cluster should be chosen based on interest. Students can refer to ACT Explore results to help make a decision. Megan will discuss ACT Explore results briefly and how they can relate to choosing a career cluster. Describe careers related with each cluster. Business- Computer applications, game design, graphic design Human S.- service type hotel management, education, Health-nursing, medical field Agriculture- Engineering/Tech- Automotive, electrical, electronics, Fine Arts- music, theater

Requirements for Graduation 2017
Professional Pathway Skilled Pathway 4 English 4 Science (3 labs) 4 Social Studies 4 Math 1 Fine Art 1 Health 1 Physical Education 2 foreign language (same) 1 credit in career concentration 3 hrs. work based learning 24 total credits 4 English 3 Science (no lab req.) 4 Social Studies 4 Math 1 Fine Art 1 Health 1 Physical Education 4 courses related to selected concentration 3 hrs. work based learning 24 total credits This is just a break down of what is required for both pathways.

Science Courses Professional/ Skilled Pathway Physical Science 9 (H)
Biology (H) AP Biology (H) Conceptual Chemistry (Skilled) Chemistry (H) Dual Credit Physics Advanced Environmental Earth Science Human Anatomy AP Environmental Science All fresh must take PS 9 however these are other options available throughout high school (H) This course is available as an honors course

Social Studies Courses
Professional/Skilled Pathway World Studies to 1900 (H) (9) U.S. to 1900 (H) (10) 20/21st Century Studies (H) (11) Civics/Government (H) (12) AP United States History AP U.S. Government Psychology AP Human Geography All Fresh must take World Studies to 1900 however other hst courses are offered throughout high school.

Math Courses Professional/Skilled Pathway Math I-III (H) Geometry (H)
Algebra II (H) Algebra III Trigonometry Statistics Pre-Calculus AP Calculus All freshman will be taking Math I as freshmen unless they took Math I in the 8th grade.

Other Electives: Dance Journalism Debate Broadcast Journalism Chorus I Vocal Ensemble Marching Band Instrumental Music Life Fitness Theater I Stagecraft Agriculture courses Horticulture Floriculture Army JROTC Electrical Trades Human Services Courses Parenting & Strong Families Event Planning & Design Graphic Design Health Science Foundations Career Exploration Business/Marketing courses Business computer applications Digital Imaging Game Design Recommended: Foreign Language Spanish* Fine Art * Career Major Course Students in the professional pathway should choose an elective in Spanish early. Students should also consider taking a Fine arts elective early in high school since it is a graduation requirement. The High school counselors will provide students with a course description book during pre-registration.

Band I Marching Band Instrumental Music I Guitar Music Appreciation Dance I Chorus I Theatre I Stagecraft It is important for students to consider enrolling in courses required for graduation early during their high school years. This ensures they have met pre-req’s for other classes and provide flexibility if a class needs to be repeated because of failure.
