Keeping Track of Time We keep track of time to help us make sense of history We categorize time into two periods, BCE and CE BCE – Before Common Era CE – Common Era Year 0

6 Keeping Track of Time BCE stands for Before Common Era, and includes any year before the year 0. Years during BCE are like negative numbers on a number line. They get smaller as you move towards 0. 2000 BCE 1000 BCE 500 BCE Year 0 BCE – Before Common Era

7 CE stands for Common Era, and includes any year after the year 0.
Keeping Track of Time CE stands for Common Era, and includes any year after the year 0. Years during CE are like positive numbers on a number line. They get larger as you move away from 0. 2011 CE Year 0 500 CE 1000 CE 2000 CE CE –Common Era

8 Timeline Vocabulary Decade Century Millennium
Ancient Greek dekas which means ten A decade is ten years Century from the Latin centum, meaning one hundred Millennium the Latin root word mille means thousand, and annus (ium), year

9 Make your own timeline On your notes: Draw a line, with 0 on it.
Mark your timeline with important events from your life, starting from your birth year.
