4. Melody 3 Step 1 – Melody 3 Choose 4 new notes for melody 3 again from the chord below the bar Bar number 1 2 Melody 3 C G E C Melody 2 C E G E A C E A Melody 1 _C _ _E_ _A _ _E_ Chord C e g C A c e A Write your four melody notes here Again you can choose from C E or G to make your melody in this bar
2
Sequence in melody for bar 1 (use quarter-notes to fit four into the bar)
3
Step 2a – working out if passing notes are possible
Rules for adding passing notes in between chord notes: Passing notes will go in between the 4 chord notes in melody 3 They can only go there if there is a gap of just one note between the chord notes e.g. between the first two notes ‘C’ and ‘G’ there is a gap of 3 notes so there cannot be a passing note between these two Bar number 1 2 Melody for violin 3 C G E C 3 note gap
4
Step 2b – working out if passing notes are possible
So there are no passing notes between the first 2 notes ‘C’ and ‘G’ What about the second 2 notes ‘G’ and ‘F’? – a passing note can only go there if there is a gap of just one note between the chord notes Between the second two notes ‘G’ and ‘E’ there is a gap of 1 note so ‘F’ can be a passing note to pass between these two Bar number 1 2 Melody for violin 3 C G E C 1 note gap – this can be a passing note
5
Step 3 – adding passing notes
Rules for adding passing notes in between chord notes: Write the passing note in-between the chord notes The passing note always joins the note on its left I have written the notes in lower case because they will have to be shorter to still fit into four-beats-in-a-bar Bar number 1 2 Melody for violin 3 f C G E C Melody for violin 3 C gf E C
6
Step 4 – Because two notes now have to share the same space you will have to half the length of the fist note (down to an 1/8)
7
Step 5 - Now you can add the new passing note (an ‘F’ in this case)
8
Step 6 - The note needs to be extended to an 1/8 in length to reach the next note in the melody
9
Repeat these steps for the rest of melody 3
Now for the last two notes – and a reminder of the rules… Rules for adding passing notes in between chord notes: Passing notes will go in between the 4 chord notes in melody 3 They can only go there if there is a gap of just one note between the chord notes e.g. between the last two notes ‘E’ and ‘C’ there is a gap of 1 note so D can be a passing note to pass between these two Bar number 1 2 Melody for violin 3 C G E C 1 note gap – this can be a passing note
10
Step 2b – adding passing notes
Write the passing note in-between the chord notes The passing note always joins the note on its left I have written the notes in lower case again because they will have to be shorter to still fit into the four-beats-in-a-bar Bar number 1 2 Melody for violin 3 d C gf E C Melody for violin 3 C gf ed C
11
Add the new passing note by shortening the ‘E’ and adding in the ‘D’ as an 1/8 note
12
These slides show how to add passing notes directly into your sequenced melody without writing them down
13
Passing note can go between the second two notes of E and C
14
The passing note in this case is ‘D’ which passes nicely between ‘E’ and ‘C’
15
Don’t forget to make the notes into 1/8ths so that they fit into the bar
16
There is room for one more passing note between the last two notes ‘C’ and ‘A’: – a ‘B’ will pass nicely between these last two notes Remember the passing note always joins the note on its left so both these notes will need to become 1/8ths
