9 How do successful missionaries study and prepare to teach?
• Seek and follow the Spirit. • Strive to consistently study, treasure up, and apply doctrine. • Work with their companion to make specific plans to teach each person, adjusting the order, length, and pace of the lessons to meet needs. • Teach often from the scriptures with clarity and conviction. • Bear testimony frequently. • Evaluate their teaching

10 Seventeen Steps to Successful Scripture Study
Before you study Set aside (plan) time for study; consider an alarm on a phone or studying with a friend Develop and write down a systematic plan for study; be consistent Pray for understanding and invite the help of the Holy Ghost before you being reading As you start to read Read the Chapter Heading and determine the setting (Who? When? Where?) Visualize Insert your name as you read; as you read, look for lists, connections, patterns, and parallels  Look for Footnotes (Heb., Gr., IE., OR, JST, BD, TG, Maps, Gazetteer) While you are reading Ask, “Why might the Lord have inspired the writer to include this detail?” Mark doctrines, facts/historical information, power phrases, questions, flag words (therefore, but, behold, thus we see, wherefore, hearken, if, etc.), Questions/Answers, If/Then statements, definitions (Zion=the pure in heart), repeated words, attention words (Behold, Hearken, Verily, Certainly, Truly), conclusion Words (I say unto you, Thus we see, Therefore, Wherefore, Inasmuch, Hence) Look for symbolism in Objects, Places, Names, Titles, Animals, Events, Food, People, Rituals, Numbers

11 Seventeen Steps to Successful Scripture Study
As you conclude your reading Consider memorizing a verse Look up unfamiliar words or the original definitions of words and the Lord’s definitions Read approved commentaries and manuals Ponder by asking, “So, what?” or completing the statement, “Thus we see . . .” Write your thoughts and feelings; jot down application, additional insights, correlations, cross-references, questions which personalize and also any unanswered questions After you conclude your reading Pray to invite the help of the Holy Ghost for additional relevancy Make a plan to act in Faith based on the day’s study; consider sharing what you learned with others

12 HOMEWORK: Chapter 2 Use a study journal and record your thoughts and feelings about a few of these topics: Read Doctrine and Covenants 138:1–11. What did President Smith have to do for his mind to be opened? How did he feel about the doctrine he was thinking about? Read the definition of knowledge in the Bible Dictionary: What knowledge can help me serve effectively as a missionary? Read 1 Nephi 10:17; 11:1–6. Why was Nephi able to learn what his father knew? Rate yourself on the following (1=never, 3=some of the time, and 5=almost always). __Throughout the day I think about what I studied in the morning. __As I study, ideas come to my mind that have not occurred to me before. __I record spiritual impressions and ideas in an appropriate place. __I fall asleep as I study. __I look forward to personal study. Why is it important to study the gospel? How will my study affect those I teach? Why do I need to continually treasure up the doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ? How can I improve my personal study?
