2 New Zealand - is an islandcountry in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.

3 The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands.

4 New Zealand is organised into 11 regional councils and 67 territorial authorities for local government purposes.

5 The majority of New Zealand's population is of European descent
The indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders.

6 New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy, although its constitution is not codified. Elizabeth II is the Queen of New Zealand and the head of state.

7 Climate New Zealand has a mild and temperate maritime climate with mean annual temperatures ranging from 10 °C in the south to 16 °C in the north.

8 New Zealand's geographic isolation for 80 million years and island biogeography is responsible for the country's unique species of animals, fungi and plants. The endemic flightless kiwi is a national icon.

9 Sports Rugby union is considered the national sport and attracts the most spectators. Golf, netball, tennis and cricket have the highest rates of adult participation, while soccer is top among young people.

11 Tourism Tourism is an important industry in New Zealand.
The country is internationally seen as a top holiday destination, shown by receiving awards like being voted most favourite destination by the readers of the Condé Nast Traveler magazine (specialising in luxury travels) in 2008.
