Book Trust National literacy non-profit
Partner with Scholastic and leverage their operations Book Trust is a national literacy nonprofit and a 501c3. We fundraise all dollars to support the program. Some of these dollars come from schools, districts, generous individuals, and corporate donors. We partner together with Scholastic to bring Book Trust to you. We leverage Scholastic’s operational and distribution system to bring books to students at a low cost. The $1 and $2 titles are extremely cheap. You cannot get a $1 book anywhere, but Scholastic. We leverage this to bring over 1 million books to kids a year. Book Trust students choose $7 worth of books from the Scholastic catalog every month for 9 months of the year.

Book Trust Student Reading Growth
Book Trust surveys both Book Trust Teachers and non book trust teachers every spring. One of the results I’d like to show you today is the comparison in reading growth between students at a non-Book Trust school and students at a Book Trust school. Book Trust teachers report more student achievement in reading growth than non Book Trust teachers. While both Book Trust teachers and comparison school teachers report that students began the year at the same reading levels, Book Trust teachers reported that their students grew to 59% proficiency, while the comparison schools reported that students grew to 39% proficiency. This 20 point difference was not only statistically significant – but it matches a 5 year trend for the Program. This is huge! Book Trust Teachers, just like you, are doing fantastic work guiding the program on the ground level.

Book Trust Program Components
Choice Strong classroom culture of literacy Book Trust is a national literacy program that gives students the opportunity to fall in love with reading. Teachers implement the Program every month in their classrooms with their students. They prioritize empowering students to choose books, building a strong classroom culture of reading and literacy, and engaging families around reading at least 20 minutes a night with their growing Book Trust home library. Book Trust students are more motivated to read after participating in the Program and teachers cite Book Trust as one of the most meaningful classroom tools available to them. Family Engagement
12
Empowering students to choose books
Students Choose Anticipation Builds Engagement Increases September through May, the Book Trust Program provides students with the opportunity to choose and own their own books. Choice is a critical first step to ensuring that a child has the opportunity to fall in love with reading and is a unique part of the Program.
13
Student Choice Choice increases motivation to read
Readers are most engaged and excited about their reading when they are able to choose their own books. Because choice is one of the most powerful methods for enhancing the motivation to read, Book Trust Teachers make class time each month for choice. By ensuring students to find books that excite and interest them, Book Trust teachers lay the foundation for student motivation.
14
Anticipation Builds Students await the arrival of books
Teachers mark a “reading celebration” day on the calendar Book Trust Teachers use the monthly book ordering process to build anticipation and excitement for their students around reading. Students track The Book Box and anxiously await the arrival of their books after the order is placed with Scholastic Reading Club. Even before the box of books arrives, teachers begin building anticipation by marking the calendar with a ‘reading celebration’ day.
15
Engagement Increases Motivation to Read Profile Assessment
Choice and anticipation help increase engagement and motivation for students around reading. Students are more motivated to read when they choose the books they want to read, just like we are as adults. In fact, students participating in Book Trust have performed higher on the Motivation to Read Profile Assessment – this assessment measures both the value of reading and the self-concept of students as readers
16
Ideas for Choice Mingle Mingle Gallery Walk
Mingle Mingle (perfect for kinesthetic learners) – students mingle around the room with their flyer. Teachers pick a signal word to say (for example, you school mascot) so the kids will stop and partner up. Repeat and the students can do it up to 3-4 times. They can share what they’re thinking of ordering and they can learn what their classmates are thinking of ordering. Gallery Walk is similar to the picture above. Instead students can lay out their Scholastic catalogs on their desks after circling what they’re interested in. They then leave their desks and walk around the room to check out what other students are ordering. Older kids can write comments on sticky notes like “I want that book too” or “I’ve read that book”
17
Ideas for Choice Club Leo flyer and “We Need Diverse Books” flyer
Be sure to request the Club Leo catalog for book titles in Spanish. There is a new catalog this year that includes books with diverse characters. Keep an eye out for the catalog coming out from Scholastic and the non-profit “We Need Diverse Books” that Scholastic will have available this fall. Book Trust doesn’t know the name yet – but we will message as soon as we find out. Club Leo Flyers/We Need Diverse Flyer: Although these flyers come in once every few months, teachers can access the online catalog and order books from these catalogs every single month.
18
Ideas for Choice For younger students, work together 1-1 or in small groups to choose books that add to $7
19
Ideas for Choice Cut apart Scholastic catalogs by reading level and price to make choice easier for students

Fun Fact 90% of teachers who used the Book Trust Program said that Book Trust increased the social acceptability of reading
22
2. Classroom culture of literacy
Celebration Sharing Routine Independent reading Book Trust classrooms are a place of reading celebration. Teachers make class time every month to celebrate the arrival of books and promote culture of reading among their students. Teachers prioritize class time for celebration, read-alouds, sharing, and independent reading. These activities contribute to a powerful culture and joy around reading – and what teacher doesn’t want to see that happening in their own classroom?
23
Celebration Teachers create excitement
Students participate in activities When the Book Box arrives every month, Book Trust classrooms transform into a place of celebration around books and reading. Teachers create excitement by handing out books award-style, calling each student up to get his book and announcing the titles. Teachers also employ a variety of activities introduced through Book Trust’s professional development, such as reading picnics, reading forts with flashlights, and student book clubs. Research shows that the act of celebrating books and reading is central to making reading fun and enjoyable for all students.
24
Sharing Students share out Teachers model sharing
Students share their books in their book clubs or they may even read aloud to the whole class. Research shows that book sharing is the single most important activity for reading success and develops active listening skills, new vocabulary, and respect for others ideas. Book Trust donors and classroom visitors often share in the fun, reading with students on book delivery days or receiving letters from students about the experience. Teachers build a strong classroom culture by encouraging sharing between students and modeling sharing with their own choices.
25
Routine Happens every month Instilling reading habits
Book Trust is a unique Program because it happens every month of the school year. Monthly routine builds the habits and behaviors of good readers. Book Trust Teachers establish routines and use best practices to instill reading habits in their students around choice, independent reading, and partner reading. By practicing and implementing these routines around reading, Book Trust Teachers build a classroom culture where the joy of reading and learning is discussed every day.
26
Independent Reading Teachers make class time Reading for joy
Books that students are excited to read bring a whole new meaning to independent reading time. Teachers make class time for independent reading of the Book Trust books before they go home. Because students are excited to read their books, independent reading becomes a joyful, self-directed practice in the classroom. No longer are teachers eyeing students and constantly assessing engagement in the classroom as they try to get a classroom of kids reading independently. Independent reading has an enormous impact on young readers and their ability to succeed in all subject areas.
27
Ideas on how to build culture
Have a simple celebration every time the book box arrives, such as a drum roll or clapping to get the students excited
28
Ideas on how to build culture
Have student share about their favorite books in groups or to the whole class

Fun Fact 98% of Book Trust Teachers report that their students are reading at home with their families Book Trust students read more at home with their families than non-Book Trust students. 98% of Book Trust teachers report that their students are reading at home with their families and Book Trust students also report with a higher frequency that they have a favorite book in their home, they read book with their families, and they know what their reading level is.
31
3. Family Engagement Ownership Home libraries 20 minutes a night
Helping families to read regularly in the home contributes toward strong reading behaviors and achievement in the classroom. The Program serves as a bridge between classrooms and families when students own books and take them home every month to build their library. Teachers leverage the books as a platform to discuss reading with families and to promote the importance of reading at least 20 minutes every night.
32
Ownership Students own books Students write their names on books
Students participating in Book Trust become book owners with a growing home library. The entire class then reads independently or with reading buddies. Then, the books go home. By addressing the “book gap” between children of middle-income and low-income families, Book Trust is ensuring that all children have the opportunity to read at home, many for the first time in their lives. Students who are book owners are more likely to read above their expected reading level than students who do not own books.
33
Home Libraries Students create a special place for their books
As students own and take home books every month in the Book Trust Program, they begin to build home libraries. Teachers encourage students to create a special place for their books and even help students to build shoe box library shelves to promote the home library. These home libraries then become a resource not only for the student, but the entire family. Many families report that all siblings use and read the Book Trust Books. Kids are collecting up to 30 books throughout the school year. There is a special lesson plan this year in the teacher toolkit that will be available to you to use.
34
20 minutes a night Students read to others Students use reading logs
Research shows that reading for 20 minutes a night pays dividends in a child’s education, so teachers use the new home libraries to encourage families to read nightly. Students share that they read to their families, their families read to them, that siblings and cousins read together, and that sometimes they even read to the family pet. Book Trust Teachers also have reading logs and other tools to promote this nightly reading with families. When families make time for reading, students become better readers and have more success in school and in life. Teachers can give parents best practices and resources for how you do this.
