5 Introduction The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is adapted from Palli and Sanskrit calendar that is purely based on agriculture and religious festivals and weather. Historically Sinhala New Year was celebrated in the Kandyan Kingdom as a national festival under the patronage of the Sinhala kings. The day of Sinhala New Year was fixed in keeping with the rituals. The astrologers used to work out Neketh ( auspicious time) to perform the traditional rituals for good luck, prosperity anmd happiness for the people and the kingdom.

6 Little bit about Sinhala and Tamil New Year
When the sun moves from Pisces to Aries in the celestial sphere, Sri Lanka begin celebrating New Year. It marks the end of the harvest season. The celebration of New Year may officially lasts for seven days. It is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Modern day activities related to the celebration of the traditional New Year is based on auspicious times given by the astologers. The New Year celebration therefore can be through as a complex mix of indigenous astrological, Hindu and Buddhist tradition.

7 Cuckoo bird A type of cuckoo bird, the Asian Koel has a strong association with the new year celebration in traditional literature around the festival. Cuckoo is a bird a sign of New Year. The mating season of the bird roughly coincoides with the festival season. The mating call of the male bird is regarded as a heraiding sign of the traditional New Year. This birs is known as the Koha in Sri Lanka Sinhala Language.
