2
RE4 Scope
3
Bakelite Panels Characteristics Procurement Relatively porous material
Need well-defined resistivity 2-6 x 1010 ohm-cm Sensitive to temperature and humidity Procurement Previous supplier out of business Testing many new vendors and bakelite variations Resistivity changes over time Now have a preferred supplier - Puricelli Re-established bakelite production sequence: QA at Pavia, cutting at RIVA, cleaning at GT
4
Bakelite Resistivity Bakelite production should be finished by early 2012
5
RE Upgrade Assignments
6
RPC Labs in B904 Good progress on building the clean labs in B904 Lab infrastructure (gas, air-conditioning, power) should be finished by early 2012
7
CSC Upgrade Scope Scope Original design unfinished – ME4/2 not built
72(67) ME4/2 chambers to complete system Increase redundancy of system – 3 year run without access to do repairs Efficient triggering at high luminosities New digital CFEB boards for ME1/1 (part of M&O) Increased capacity for data rate Ungang the ME1/1 strips – 7 CFEBs per chamber instead of 5 72 New Datamother (DMB) boards Replace of 72 ME1/1 Trigger Mother Boards (M&O) Improve triggering for h = 2.1 to 2.4
8
Plan for Production Assembly in B904 factory at CERN
~1000 m2 space with good services (power, gas, etc.) CMS has allocated this area for the CSC production and provided significant infrastructure Shipped tooling from Fermilab All items assembled and operating Set up CSC factory during 1st half 2011 Armando Lanaro is the factory manager CMS has allocated ~ 1-2 FTE techs to help us Good participation by Russian, Chinese groups Now constructing 3 prototypes

January 2011 June 2011
10
Mounts for both RE and CSC
Finished making 133 mounting posts Identical with existing mounts Shipped to CERN last week Install on YE3 during Jan-Feb 212
11
Pre-production Status
Use existing spare parts Enough for almost 3 prototypes Factory fabrication All panels glued, wire-wound, soldered Factory equipment working fine Status One chamber completely finished (gas-tight, low HV current) and in 2-month HV test One chamber finished without frame Frame pieces from new vendor will ship soon One chamber awaiting assembly Spare chamber refurbished and operational
12
Winding Panels About μm thick AuW wires are wound on the anode panel with a ~3.16mm pitch. Total wire length ~2600 m per panel. Winding time: ~4h per panel. 9 panels have been successfully wound
13
Automatic Soldering Automatic wire soldering is done using the Panasonic machine. It is fully operational and has been used to solder most of the 8 wound anode panels.
14
Assembly of 1st new CSC
15
Long term test of 1st CSC
16
Production Status I Honeycomb panels Chamber & Integration parts
Vendor failed to deliver pre-production samples CERN cancelled the contract in September Fermilab issuing new contracts this week Expect first panels at CERN by Spring ‘12 Chamber & Integration parts All remaining parts ordered, most delivered Validation of parts in progress On-chamber cables AFEB, CFEB cables ordered from previous vendors LV harness parts ordering in progress
17
Production Status II On-chamber Electronics
AFEB boards (read out wires) Have sufficient ASICs from original production Have many spare AFEB boards, need only ~750 (~40%) Good quote from previous vendor, issue contract soon CFEB boards (read out strips) Enough spares for one endcap Use boards recovered from ME1/1 for 2nd endcap ALCT boards (anode trigger) Mezzanine board FPGA: Virtex-E(orig) vs. Spartan-6 Costs: Virtex-E $735 vs. Spartan-6 ($230) Look-up tables: Virtex-E 9.6K vs. Spartan-6 (92K) Plan: use Spartan-6, build enough for ME1/1 chambers too
18
Chamber Testing FAST site (Final Assembly and Testing)
Add cooling plate, electronics, strain reliefs, and covers in B904 factory Perform final tests using CMS DAQ system Requires modifications of existing software Build test stand using production electronics Run a standard set of tests similar to the original FAST site testing Status Software modifications of UXC DAQ code begun Hardware being assembled Computer ordered, shipped to CERN FAST site operational in early 2012
19
ME1/1 Electronics Upgrade
Accomplishments R&D prototypes completed for Trigger Motherboard (TMB) Mezzanine and Digital Cathode Front End Board (DCFEB) DCFEB prototype tested with CSC in Bat. 904 TMB used as platform for radiation tests (SEU) of components at TAMU cyclotron EMU Connector card assembled for tests of optical communication Prototype FF_EMU ASIC prototype completed, tested New Low Voltage Distribution prototypes designed, fabricated Installation mockup, mechanical and cable specifications
20
Summary RE Upgrade CSC Upgrade B904 clean labs mostly finished
Bakelite procurement underway CSC Upgrade Factory operational, experts are trained 1st preproduction chamber finished, under test Other preproduction chambers nearing completion Procurements of parts, electronics, cables, etc. going well Panel production now seems on-track
