Design and Construction of the Glue Machine for ATLAS sMDT Chamber Assembling

2. sMDT for ATLAS muon detector upgrade
New sMDT will be built to upgrade the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer barrel for both tracking and trigger, which will increase the trigger efficiency from 65% to 95%
sMDT = Small Monitored Drift Tube
Diameter of MDT is 30mm
Diameter of sMDT is 15mm
Need build smaller MDT in order to add additional trigger chamber layer: sRPC
MDT->sMDT:
shorter drift time
better linear space-to-drift time relationship
 excellent tracking resolution

3. Michigan’s Tasks
Build & test 48 precision sMDT chambers
Need to build chamber construction facilities at UM, including:
Chamber assembly room
Precision jigging
Automatic glue-machine
Gas, HV and cosmic ray test stations …
I will report the glue machine design and construction work today
Dry run to build a sMDT prototype at High Bay
Tubes are not glued; we need to build the glue machine to glue 8 layers tubes + a spacer frame into a sMDT chamber

5. Glue machine parts preparation
Linear units and motor controllers are ordered from ISEL company (NY)
Machine assembling joints and plates are ordered, and but need to be modified
Glue dispenser structure made in our shop (see drawings made by me)

Glue Machine Assembling using parts from ISEL (it took 3 month to get the parts to UM)
Debug the control program
“Dry Run” & Adjustment the motion speeds with dummy tubes
Goal: to complete glue machine design and construction at the end of this year
