Materials to make a “fake” campfire (paper tubes, red/orange/yellow paper)
LEADER NOTES
Your campfire program does not have to be around an actual, literal campfire – although that would be nice, of course! You can have a “pretend” campfire … and the other (non-Wolf) Scouts could make some fake logs out of wrapping paper tubes or paper towel tubes, with red/yellow and orange construction paper/wrapping paper/crepe paper, etc. You can also just have a “pretend” campfire.
You can plan your “campfire” for the end of THIS meeting, or for another meeting.

Meeting Plan
GATHERING (5 minutes)
OPENING (4 minutes):
Flag Ceremony/Pledge of Allegiance/Scout Oath and Law (consider dispensing with a formal flag ceremony and simply to the Pledge/Oath/Law standing in place to save time)
Scout Law POINT OF THE WEEK: TRUSTWORTHY! A Scout is TRUSTWORTHY – which means people can depend on a Scout to be truthful. When we talk and communicate with others, our truthfulness is a key element of successful communication.
Ask the Scouts assemble, break them into groups of 5 or 6. It doesn’t matter their age. Give each group a task that they have to accomplish WITHOUT TALKING!
For example:
Arrange themselves in a line, shortest to tallest
Arrange themselves in a line according to birthday.
Arrange themselves in a line according to grade.
Arrange themselves in a line according to number of brothers/sisters.
You can make up other tasks … until you have the group assembled.

3. TYPES OF COMMUNICATION … 5 - 7 minutes
Open a discussion as to the different types of communication. See if your Scouts can think of all these (and more!):
Speaking Writing Movies TV Sign-language
Non-verbal Braille Billboards/signs Smoke signals
Singing Dancing Music CODES SnapChat (and such)
Photographs
Ask your Scouts if only HUMANS communicate? If they think other species communicate with each other … and/or with humans, get a few examples …..
Ask your Scouts what they think life would be like without COMMUNICATION? In a totally silent world? You can tell them (briefly) the story of Helen Keller who was born deaf and blind and mute. She couldn’t communicate at all and was very wild as a child until a teacher (Annie Sullivan) taught her sign language … she manipulated Helen’s hand/palm to write words and connect them with objects. Signing “WATER” in her hand while Helen’s other hand was touching water, until one day Helen make the connection.
COMMUNICATION GAMES (10 minutes)
LEADER NOTES – You’ve already played ONE communication game as the gathering activity. Now play one or two more. You can pick from the below suggestions or make something up yourself!
CHARADES – Write out cards (at least 1 per Scout) with simple nouns and verbs for the younger Scouts and more complicated things for the older boys. Ask them to draw a card from the appropriate pile and act out the word/phrase. Get other to guess!
PICTIONARY … if you’ve got the game, you can select some game cards. If not, do the same as for charades above and make your own. Here, instead of acting out the card, the Scout has to DRAW IT (on white/chalk board) without TALKING.
TABOO – This is also similar, and if you have the game, select some cards. In this the Scout sees a card with the ANSWER PHRASE or WORD and then below it, there is a list of words they cannot use to describe the answer. For example, if the ANSWER is Cinderella, the taboo words might be fairy god-mother, Prince Charming, step-sisters. The Scout can say ANTHING but the taboo words. You (leader) can look at card if they say a taboo word, shout out “TABOO” …

4. COMMUNICATION GAMES (cont’d)
Telephone Message Communication game – Line up Scouts, one behind the other. Each one must WHISPER the message they receive from the Scout in front to the Scout in back of them. You, the Leader, start the game with the original message. The original message should be long enough to generate some confusion by the end!
EXAMPLE: One day a boy named Bob jumped over a fence. He was very tall, and he carried a box of onions in his red back-pack. He tripped and fell, and his pack come open and all the onions fell out and ran out into the street. A big bus came by and ran over them. Bob was sad that all the onions were hurt. (you can make up your own message!)
You can only say the message ONCE between each pair of people. When you get to the very end of the line, have the SCOUT who heard it LAST repeat it out loud. Then you read the original message, and you’ll see how different they are!
After the big laugh that is sure to come, talk about why this happened and what they can learn from this game.
MAKE A CAMPFIRE & SKITS & PERFORM ( minutes)
Break up the Scouts by den. Ask each den to work together to create an ORIGINAL skit. You may need to set some “rules” about the content. Rotate among them to see how they are doing. If you are going to do the skits at the end of the meeting, they might not need to write anything down. If you are going to perform at another meeting, you may need someone to take notes.
If you want, you can also ask one group to create logs out of paper towel tubes and anther group to create flames out of colored paper, and yet a third group to arrange the chairs (or other task).
WOLVES – the Wolves need extra attention during this task as they are to “run” the campfire. You can make this simple or more elaborate. But tell them to have a opening/welcome, each group to do something, maybe a song to sing, and a “Cubmaster Minute” to end with. Again, if you are doing this at the end of the meeting, you will need to improvise. But honestly, the skits won’t take long.
