1 Highlights from INFN-MED
the INFN strategic project for Medicine Areas of interest: Imaging Treatment Planning and Software projects Accelerator devices for Hadron Therapy BNCT Devices for Medical Diagnostics

2 Imaging: MAGIC-5 Project
Fall out from the experience in the analysis of particle phyiscs experiments A highly competitive lung CAD (Computer Assisted Detection) has been developed, capable of speeding up diagnosis response in case of large screenings. Based on the development of different and complementary pattern recognition algorithms. Several recognitions at international level. Looking for an industrial partner to turn the prototype into a market product

3 (for instance Alzheimer Disease)
Neuroimaging For the understanding and early diagnosis of pathophysiological mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases (for instance Alzheimer Disease) Promising results work with the European Alzheimer’s Disease Consortium (EADC) Plans: Full MRI/PET combined analysis Development of more efficient computational tools WWW access to the clinical world Furthermore, side product from Magic-5: development of an innovative web service to manage Clinical Trials (diXit). Particularly useful for the experimentation in pharmacology

4 Treatment Planning System for therapy with C ions
Fall out from the experience in software management, simulation tools, radiobiology and nuclear phsycs Collaboration Agreement with IBA . Development of .innovative system to be embedded in the “Oncology Information System” (OIS) in a configuration known under the name of MOSAIQ-RTP (Commercialized by Eleckta-CMS, controlled by IBA)

5 Status of development To Be Released October 2010 Plan To Be Released
April 2010 Released April 2010 Released August 2010 To Be Released January 2011

6 Complete the design of a new Accelerator Source: MISHA
Multicharged Ion Source for HAdrontherapy At CNAO center for hadrontherapy two ECR sources of the SUPERNANOGAN type (built by the Pantechnik company according to specifications set by INFN) are in operation. A further increase of accelerator reliability involves the improvement of the beam brightness, which can be achieved with the design and construction of a new ECR ion source, able to provide more than 600 eµA of C4+ with an emittance figure of 0.75π mm. mrad. The MISHA source will be a multipurpose device, providing enough versatility for future needs of the hadron therapy. The MISHA source has been designed on the basis of the expertise existing in INFN Labs (LNS and LNL, G. Ciavola et al.) Of interest for all accelerators for hadrontherapy

7 General layout of the MISHA source and of its Low Energy
Maximum radial field 1.3 T Maximum axial field 2.5 T / 1.5 T Frequency 18 GHz GHz Maximum RF power 500 W W Maximum extraction field 50 kV Chamber diameter Ø 92 mm LHe free External Funding is being searched for (~1.5 M€ needed) General layout of the MISHA source and of its Low Energy Beam Transfer line

8 MID (under completion)
Fall out from the experience in the development of high precision magnetic apparata in particle physics. First device capable of measuring the amount of Fe in human organs in a non invasive way (i.e. avoiding biopsy). From the experience of INFN Genova, co-financed and in under operation in Galliera Hospital (Genova).

10 ECORAD Fall out from the experience in the development of new particle detectors Now exploring Patent/Technology Transfer possibilities Resp.: R.Pani, INFN and Roma 1 Univ.

11 A first presentation of the project will take place in LNL/Padova
New possibilities Design study for a facility to produce Radionuclides for Medicine using the new cyclotron at LNL LARAMED A first presentation of the project will take place in LNL/Padova at the end of November:

12 Relationships with CNAO and Healt Ministry
Monitoring cooperation with CNAO foundation for hadron therapy in view of: MC Simulation Pre-clinic activity Treatment Plannig evolution Definition of collaboration agreement with Health Ministry for scientific exchange, relationship with industry in medical sector, cofinancing of activities of common interest
