1 Food Bank of Central New York Increasing Perishable Distributions
Adapting our actions to maximize resources Thanks for attending this conference, and thank you for providing services within your communities.

2 An available resource The perishable food category offers donation opportunity and excellent sources of nutrition. At the same time, we adjust to relatively short shelf life and special storage requirements. Taking the greatest advantage of this resource requires flexibility, innovation, and some changes in distribution habits. Making the most of what passes through our network.

3 Increasing categories
2010 2012 2016 Fresh fruit/veg 1,185,430 1,634,424 2,235,906 And of course, grocery rescue has grown incredibly.

4 What are the challenges?
Time It’s overwhelming! These resources have increased value because of the work that occurs in OUR supply chain. Staff Cooler space

5 What is it about perishable product?
Perishable Pros Availability Nutrition Versatility Value Perishable Cons Requires cooler space Can receive only on distribution day Is it a little “love - hate”?

6 Could you make use of low cost, temporary, refrigerated space that was available only when you needed it? Note audience reaction…comments?

7 With that in mind… I attended NYSAR3 2015 conference
This led to Governor Cuomo’s “Capitol for a Day” event in Syracuse. Resulted in grant monies that would “increase recycling and provide cost savings for farmers and municipalities”. Food Bank of Central New York was awarded some of these funds for the production of 3 mobile walk-in coolers for the purpose of increasing perishable donations, including local agriculture and retail rescue. This grew into an unexpected resource and partnership with DEC/NYSAR3.

Arctic Vans is partnered with manufacturer Integrity Trailers. Arctic Vans then does all customization into a refrigerated, food safe unit. Ours in particular is powered by the economical CoolBot system.

17 Base units arrive for build-out.
Arctic worked with Integrity on a design modification to widen the space between the wheel covers to allow for 2 pallet widths.

21 “Just a little off the side”.
The shaving tool rides along the furring strips to level out the expanded foam. This “overage” assures the full 4” of insulation required for the R-28 spec.

23 Luan applied over the foamed framing.
This adds rigidity and strength to the entire unit while offering structure to the FRP paneling.
