1 Potential and Kinetic Energy

2 What is Energy? Anything that can cause a change in matter.

3 Two Types of Energy: Kinetic Energy Potential Energy

4 Potential Energy 1. Potential Energy is stored energy. 2. An object with potential energy has the ability to move or change.

5 Potential Energy 3. Potential energy depends on an object’s position or condition. Example:

6 Examples:

7 Kinetic Energy 4. Kinetic Energy is the energy of movement. 5. It depends on the mass and speed of a moving object.

16 Card Sort Determine if the situation on each card is showing potential energy or kinetic energy.

17 PE and KE Lab! Follow all directions carefully.
Be sure you test each marble position twice. Answer your conclusion questions when your group finishes.

18 Discussion When did the marble have the most potential energy?
When did the cup move the farthest? What did this show you about potential and kinetic energy?

19 How are Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy related?
Energy can be transferred from potential to kinetic energy. If an object has more potential energy to start, then it will have more kinetic energy when it starts moving.

20 Catalyst What is potential energy? What is kinetic energy?
Give an example of each.

21 Homework On a blank sheet of paper, draw two pictures of situations showing potential energy and two pictures of situations showing kinetic energy. Explain in words why each situation shows that type of energy.

22 Forms of Energy

23 Forms of Energy 1. All energy falls into two categories:
Potential: stored energy and energy of position Kinetic: motion of waves, electrons, atoms, molecules and substances.

24 2. What Forms of Energy Are There?
POTENTIAL KINETIC Chemical Energy Nuclear Energy Gravitational Energy Radiant Energy Electrical Energy Mechanical Sound Thermal Energy

25 How will we ever remember these?!
Just remember the sentence: Cam Newton got really excited making stinky tacos.

26 Cam= Chemical Newton= Nuclear Got= Gravitational Really= Radiant Excited= Electrical Making= Mechanical Stinky= Sound Tacos= Thermal

27 1. Cam=Chemical Energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules.
Example: Matches, Digestion, batteries

28 2. Newton= Nuclear Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. The energy that holds the nucleus together. Example: Breaking down Uranium

29 3. Got= Gravitational Energy of place or position. Higher=more gravitational energy. Example: two plants at different heights

30 4. Really= Radiant Example: Visible Light Electromagnetic energy that travels in waves like light.

31 5. Excited= Electrical Movement of electrons. Example: lamp, computer

32 6. Making= Mechanical The movement of a substance from one place to another. Motion. Example: Riding a bike

33 7. Stinky = Sound Movement of energy through substances in waves.
Example: bell

34 8. Tacos= Thermal The vibration or movement of atoms and molecules. Heat. Example: stove boiling water
