Nation of Islam Black Power Black Panthers Balck Panthers- Founded by Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale and others, this party justified the use of violence in the accomplishment of black justice. In 1967, Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali refused induction into the armed forces on both religious and political grounds. The next year, John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their gloved fists in a black power salute from the victory stand at the Olympic Games in Mexico City.

Kennedy wins election of 1960, promises a new frontier meant to symbolize the youth of the US. And get rid of what he considered to be complacency of the Eisenhower years. Space race- promised US would place a man on the moon by the end of the decade, Alan shepherd was first American to travel into space, John Glen first American to orbit the earth Rights for disabled- began the special Olympics and created the council on Mental Retardation Women- created a commission to look into and research the status of women and will create the Equal Pay Act in 1963 Domestic- much of his new frontier policies were tied up in congress by republicns and southern democrats. Will propose a tax cut, department of urban affairs, medicare, a civil right bill, housing subsidies, immigration reform, federal aid to education, none of these will be passed under kennedy but will go on to be passed by LBJ Assasination- Dallas by Lee Harvey Oswald, nov 22, 1963.

Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 Presidential Election of 1964 LBJ- Texan called on congress to pass many bills they had previously opposed as a tribute to JFK, War on poverty- Economic opportunity act of created office of economic opportunity to administer programs like: Job Corps- train underprivelaged youth, VISTA- volunteers in service to America- domestic peace corp Election- Johnson won an landslide victory and gained control of both houses

Aid to Cites Appalachian Regional Development Act Immigration Act of 1965 Ends because of Vietnam War Jan great society, turn US into more egalitarian society by opening opportunities for all americans. Most ambitious program of social reform since new deal Medicare and Medicaid- care- over 65 years old; caid- low income, children, pregnant women, elderly and people with disabilities Federal aid to education- Elementary and secondary education act- gave 1 billion to school districts, higher education act provided funds for scholarships, Project head start- help prepare underprivileged children for kindergarten free Pre K all federal funding was made conditional on the desegregation of school districts Aid to cities- housing and urban development act- created new cabinet positions in charge of programs aimed at cities. Billions in aid given to cities- urban planning slum clearing, rental subsidies, reconstruction of dilapidated buildings Appalachian- federal funds to create new jobs and industries in Appalachia, Immigration act of ended national origins quota system, each country gat same amount of maximum immigrants Other programs- National Foundation of the Arts and Humanities, raised minimum wage, increased expenditures for war and poverty and space program, create PBS, issued new regualtions to reduce smog and water pollution. Vietnam- despite federal programs many americans remained impoverished, and Americas involvement in Vietnam will force Johnson to pull funsing to move towards “war” effort. People grew increasingly critical of his handling of Vietnam

Judicial Activism Freedom of Speech- Yates v. United States (1957) Equal Representation- Baker v. Carr (1962) Freedom and Religion- Engel v. Vitale (1962) Rights of accused persons- Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) and Miranda v. Arizona (1966) Warren court- court became a major instrument of social change under Earl Warren. Some critics will oppose this judicial activism arguing most of these questions should have been left to the elcted branches of government Yates v United states- court extended the right of free speech to the communist party Baker v Carr- court ordered a reorginazation of state legislatures- redistricting voting districts to reflect the large populations in the new cities Engel v Vitale- outlawed the use of school prayers in public schools Gideon v Wainwright- Gideon faced accusations of robbery but was too poor to afford a lawer (lawers were only given to people facing the death penalty) found guilty and sentenced to 3 years in prison. Appealed case, supreme court ruled government must provide a lawyer to anyone accused of a felony who cannot afford one. Miranda v Arizona- court ruled it would not permit a confession if it was given before their constitutional rights were read to them,
