Drugs and Mental Illness
Cannabis is responsible for 14 emergency admissions each week Most widely used drug in the UK Link between Cannabis use and Psychosis addictive in around 10% of users, which means it can lead to dependency problems. Lead to Social Problems Employment difficulties Cannabis being reclassified to a class B controlled drug can cause hallucinations, paranoia, restlessness, agitation and very distressing, unpleasant thoughts and can lead to schizophrenia Amphetamine (speed) can also lead to psychosis again a class B drug, but class A if injected Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in Britain but there’s growing evidence of a link with mental health problems While cannabis is not physically addictive (as heroin is), it is commonly accepted as being psychologically addictive in around 10% of users, which means it can lead to dependency problems. Clinical studies have also linked cannabis with an increased risk of mental health disorders, including schizophrenia and psychosis. Experts from the British Lung Foundation believe smoking one cannabis joint has the same damaging effect on the lungs as five cigarettes. Other lung problems linked to cannabis smoking include bronchitis and asthma. The gateway theory (that smoking cannabis leads to use of other drugs) is hotly debated, with a recent government report claiming that any gateway factor is too small to be a major risk.
