What do our emotions tell us?
Emotions are strong reactions that are felt in response to an experience Awareness is key; it helps you to express what you are feeling in a clear manner Emotion accompanied by facial changes Some emotions can cause physiological changes Examples?

Anger: Questions for discussion
What are some reasons why a person might get angry? What is hostility? How can anger be helpful? How can it be handled in a constructive manner? Is it ever a good idea to suppress one’s anger? Why or why not?

Activity: Grief Take a moment and on your own think about a time when you either experienced OR witnessed grief from: a. Death of a loved one b. Divorce of parents c. Loss of a close friend How did you/someone close to you feel when it first happened? Be specific How did you learn to handle the grief?

Types of Mental Disorders
Organic Disorders: Caused by a physical problem that impairs brain functions either permanently or temporarily Degenerative Disorders: Progressive deterioration of tissue over several years Functional Disorders: Develop as a result of a person’s environment (childhood or stress) Symptoms include: Personality or mood changes Caused by Chemical Imbalance (temporary or permanent)
