1 Unit 1 Lecture 6: Separation Techniques
The student can design and/or interpret the results of a separation experiment (filtration, paper chromatography, column chromatography, or distillation) in terms of the relative strength of interactions among and between the components.

2 How can a mixture of two or more substances be separated?
List various methods that can be used to separate a mixture. Discuss when the method would work the best (i.e. only liquid mixtures, only when a heterogeneous mixture) Record ideas. Many examples in the kitchen – strainer, gravy separator, forceps, evaporation

3 How do various separation techniques work?
Visit each station and make observations. Hypothesize how the process works at the atomic level. For each station, identify if a physical or chemical property is used in the separation.

4 Station 1: Fractional Distillation

5 Station 2: Centrifuge

6 Station 3: Buchner Funnel Vacuum Filtration

7 Station 4: Magnetism

8 Opps…. You accidently spilled the sugar and pepper together. How would you go about separating the mixture? Salt and Pepper
