9/4 Today you will need… Pick up paper from side table
To sit by your lab group We will work on how to write a formal lab report in class today. I will give you time to start writing this report. IT IS DUE NEXT FRIDAY.
2
Separation of Mixtures
Lab report format
3
Important starting information
Date experiment performed Your name and the names of those in your group. Your name should appear first. Title of experiment
4
Introduction In this section of the report you should give the reader background information that will help them understand the experiment that you conducted. The purpose of this lab should be clearly stated in the introduction. SHOULD BE FIVE SENTENCES
5
Hypothesis ALWAYS an if/then question that relates to the lab
Explains the reason for doing the lab or the question to be answered
6
Materials List any and all materials that you used in performing the lab Include size (i.e. 25 mL), quantity, gradation, etc.
7
Procedure that you followed
In the same format as the pre-lab procedure, describe the procedure that you actually followed to accomplish separation of the mixture. The procedures must be detailed. Equipment, size of equipment, and amounts of substances need to be included to get your full credit. If a History teacher walked in and wanted to perform YOUR lab, they could by using your procedures 7
8
Observations In paragraph form using proper grammar, describe in detail the observations that you made when performing this lab. Observations cannot be too long or too detailed. If you think you’ve written enough, you’re probably only half way there! 5 sentences minimum
9
Analysis Write the analysis question from the lab and answer the question There is only one for this lab (found on the paper I gave you in class)
10
Conclusion Write the 5 conclusion questions in this section.
Answer the questions ALSO…answer the following: 1. Was your hypothesis supported or refuted (pre-AP) 2. List TWO errors that occurred during the lab. Examples of an UNACCEPTABLE error is: I broke the glass and had to start over. I ran out of time. The equipment wasn’t working. My lab partners are idiots. WHAT ARE SOME POSSIBLE ERRORS IN THIS LAB?
11
Presentation This report should be typed, single spaced, 12 pt font.
A hard copy will be due in class next Friday, SEPTEMBER 11th. YOU CANNOT ME THE REPORT. I NEED A HARD COPY. You need to write your OWN report. IF its evident that you worked together on portions of the lab that needed to be done by yourself, you will receive a zero and have to see Ms. Carter. I have plenty examples of good lab reports. See me if you need help.
